It was an honor to participate last week in a White House convening on Financing Clean Energy for Industrial Decarbonization: Spotlight on Aluminum. Many thanks to the Clean Energy Buyers Association (CEBA), White House staff and other participants for organizing a great event highlighting the critical role of aluminum in the energy transition, the decline in domestic production (from 23 operating smelters in 2000 to only 4 currently) and the significant role of electricity costs (as much as 40% of the overall cost to produce primary aluminum). We had engaging discussions on leveraging innovative transaction structures and policy tools to facilitate affordable clean energy for decarbonizing a critical sector ahead of increasing demand. #decarbonization #energytransition #cleanenergy

📄 Creating new low carbon energy infrastructure: District Heating Network United Living Infrastructure Services built the 1.9km pipeline loop of a new industry-leading district heating system in Scotland. The system, at the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS), produces 90% less carbon emissions than traditional gas boilers, and provides heating and hot water to the major manufacturers and research centres based at AMIDS. ❓ What are district heating networks? They're systems of insulated pipes that distribute thermal energy from a central source to multiple buildings. This system could play an integral role in meeting the UK’s net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Last week, it was my pleasure to host Enrico Bonilauri on the GreenHome Institute CE webinar series discussing the Comparison of Energy Standards Code to Passive house: A Report If you missed it or want to re-watch or share it, you can do so here, anytime, on your time! https://lnkd.in/gHkGDuW7 I learned so much! Based on the survey results, it seems that people learned a lot about the different building standards, codes, and rating systems that exist, as well as their varying requirements and priorities. They also gained insight into the significant heat loss that can occur through a building's slab and into the ground. Additionally, there was a discussion about the benefits of proper energy modeling and efficient application of materials, which can reduce the amount of insulation needed for a project. Some had questions about where the data was coming from and about the complexity of some of the standards and codes discussed. There was also a lot of discussion about the big push for buildings to become all-electric and the inclusion of EV charging in net zero requirements. Overall, attendees seemed to appreciate the comparison of different building standards and codes and the insight into their varying levels of energy efficiency. What really stood out to me was he demonstrated IECC 2024 was going backwards, it was less efficient! Can we continue to rely on our building codes to progress or is it time move towards the residential green building certifications?
