Temple Massager helping 911 dispatchers, detectives and investigators. As I continue Temple Massager outreach into the law enforcement / First Responders community I am always happy to see positive tangible results from my efforts. Stress and headaches have a huge cost on productivity. One staff person that is relieved from one headache a month that can then stay on duty and not have to go home can save a Police Department $3,600 a year. Temple Massager use is now documented to save staff from pain, saving their sick leave days, saving departments from staffing shortages. What's the added savings on the stomach, liver and kidneys of not having to process a pharmaceutical? Mental Health component, using the Temple Massager changing a person's mood is conducive to better workplace environment for all. All drug free. Please see and share our press release on the attached document. More to come. #wellness #mentalhealth #firstresponders

I coined the term Blue Trauma Syndrome in my book Armor Your Self: How to Survive a Career in Law Enforcement as a means of discussing all the many factors that erode an emergency responders resilience. I used it to go beyond the simple label of "stress" as a catch all, and frankly far too simple, a description of the toxic effects of this career in policing that eat us up from the inside out. Now, I CHALLENGE YOU to pick up that discussion of Blue Trauma Syndrome in your agency, with your team or with a couple of peers and see what YOU CAN LEARN. Visit www.CopsAlive.com to read more and download a discussion sheet. #BlueTraumaSyndrome, #PoliceOfficerSuicide, #ArmorYourSelf

True or false: Service animals are required to wear an identifying vest or harness. False, although many animals do wear one. If an animal doesn’t have a vest or harness, the person may have documentation from a regulated health professional: - Audiologist or speech-language pathologist; - Chiropractor; - Nurse; - Occupational therapist; - Optometrist; - Physician or surgeon; - Physiotherapist; - Psychologist; or - Psychotherapist or mental health therapist. However, service animals do not need to have a certificate or identity card under the Human Rights Code and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. When in doubt, it is best practice to assume a service animal is legitimate unless there are indications otherwise.

Local government service is a meaningful way to build and improve communities. Police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and building inspectors keep us safe. Engineers and public works staff build and re-build the physical infrastructure. City and county planners help envision and shape future community growth. Recreation, arts and culture, and library professionals enhance community life. City, town, and county management takes the aspirations of residents and the policy goals of the elected governing board and puts those aspirations and goals into action. Did you know that local government salaries are now competitive with the private sector and often offer better benefits? Public agencies need employees with all kinds of talents, skills, and occupational interests. Join us in serving your community and making a positive impact on people's lives. #localgovernment #publicservice #communitybuilding

Adding value to others | Nonprofit Leader. Doctor of Nursing Practice. Healthcare Consultant. Coach.
As a bedside nurse, I was spit on, slapped, grabbed, groped, scratched and verbally assaulted. Many times. I did not know how to respond effectively as I had never been trained to protect myself or my patients when someone on my unit was escalating. As you may have heard in recent news, violence in hospitals is increasing and is still underreported. The nursing workforce is dwindling, and one reason nurses are leaving the profession is due to feeling vulnerable, or perceived lack of safety and protection. You may have seen my recent post of a nurse in my community who committed suicide and in a "letter to her abuser" she named the hospital and described abuse she had taken from patients and others. My heart breaks that staff who are called to care for others believe abuse is just part of the job. That is absolutely not true, and our professional nurses and other healthcare workers need to know that. Let me help you help your teams while keeping your patients safe. HARP (Hospital Assault Response & Prevention) training was designed by clinicians for clinicians. Hospital violence prevention cannot be effectively addressed by a one-size-fits-all model. HARP is specific to healthcare. As a nurse and nurse leader married to a Chief of Police (who previously led a large hospital network's police and security teams), I believe in HARP whole-heartedly (and he does too!). It's hands-down, the best training on the market for point-of-care staff and security staff, and more affordable than any other offerings. Oh, and the Ohio Hospital Association recommends HARP for their state's hospitals. Interested in learning more? Contact me! No obligation and there's never harm in inquiry 😉 #protectpatients #protecthealthcareworkers #workplacesafety #workplacewellness #hospitalsafety #workplaceviolence #workplaceviolenceprevention #prioritizesafety

As a result of the conviction of two Aurora Fire Rescue (AFR) paramedics in the Elijah McClain case, AFR Fire Chief Alec Oughton has given AFR paramedics permission to opt out of providing medical care beyond the limited scope of treatment rendered by EMTs. Apparently 10% of Chief Oughton’s paramedics have done so. What impact will this case have on recruitment/retention of Advance Life Support providers nationwide? Does an impending shortage of ALS personnel provide leverage for those providers when it comes to employment opportunities? What strategies – beyond pay -should Fire/EMS agencies adopt to ensure adequate ALS staffing?

Restraint reduction or elimination? I advocate for the elimination of restraint on a cases by case basis. Careworkers, nurses, and families, who are often unpaid carers, are not police officers or security guards. Their job is to support, not to control. Training individuals to a high level in de-escalation approaches, like low arousal techniques, is more effective than physical interventions that are quickly forgotten. Shifting the conversation from controls and restrictions to collaboration and negotiation is crucial. Supporting eradication may not bring total success immediately, but it will involve more people and places achievjng this goal . #restraint #seclusion #restrictions #humanrights #lowarousal
