Sacramento LGBTQ+ Historic Experience Project - Historic Context Statement. Help us record LGBTQ+ history in Sacramento by providing comments on this first draft historic context statement. The City of Sacramento is seeking public participation in its effort to document LGBTQ+ history in Sacramento. As we journey through June, we are proud to celebrate both Pride Month and Juneteenth, two significant observances that remind us of the power of love, equality, and freedom. Pride Month is a time to honor the LGBTQ+ community, their history, struggles, and the ongoing fight for equal rights. It's a celebration of love, identity, and the vibrant diversity that enriches our world. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in 1865. It is a powerful reminder of the resilience and contributions of Black communities and the enduring quest for racial equality. At XponentL we have built an inclusive environment where everyone is celebrated for who they are. We believe that the individual voices of our employees meld into our collective strength, regardless of class, faith, gender, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation. We play positive sum games with positive sum people. We thus strongly reject discrimination…a zero-sum power play if there ever was one. They’re often more inclined to challenge the status quo and question established design conventions, which can really drive innovation in the field." For many years and from many companies, come June I typically receive an email from my LGBT ERG encouraging me to use a rainbow Pride-themed signature, with specific instructions to remove it in July. While it's heartening to see so many companies celebrating Pride Month, it's crucial to call out the performative allyship that fades as soon as July rolls around. Rainbow-washing—using the LGBTQ+ community's symbols for marketing purposes without supporting us year-round—does not advance our cause. True allyship means advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and equality consistently, not just when it's convenient or profitable. It's long past time for corporations to do better. Support us in policy, in practice, and in the workplace every single day. If your commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion vanishes after June, then your rainbow logo is nothing more than a hollow gesture.Let's push for genuine, sustained support. We deserve more than a month of attention—we deserve real, enduring change.

Just in time for the end of 🌈 Pride Month, our friends at LGBTQ+ Victory Institute released their 2024 "Out for America" report. It is packed with insightful stats and data visualizations. We're happy to share it while highlighting a few notable findings: • Every state (plus Washington, D.C.) has at least one out LGBTQ+ elected official serving, totaling at least 1,303 LGBTQ+ elected officials nationwide. • Along with the good news, a caveat: At least 38,193 more LGBTQ+ people must be elected to achieve equitable representation. • Of particular interest to our mission: There are currently 235 LGBTQ+ state lawmakers (and only Louisiana, West Virginia and Idaho have no out legislators). Inclusion is either intersectional, or it is BS. One of the more fascinating things about DEI is that as humans our identities intersect. The problem is, so do our biases. Too often, advocates end up excluding others fighting for the same cause: 👉🏾 White feminists have burned racially marginalized women, leading to the birth of Black, Latina, and other feminist movements. 👉🏾 Black and other racially marginalized women have often been ignored in racial justice movements, creating the same scenario mentioned above. 👉🏾 Black LGBTQ+ advocates experience racism in LGBTQ+ circles and homophobia or transphobia in the Black community. Hence the formation of Black LGBTQ+ advocacy. 👉🏾 In all communities, folks with disabilities have said 1000× over that their needs are almost always left out of conversations about creating equitable spaces. You cannot step on the heads of other marginalized folks while advocating for your own equality. It’s ironic when D&I experts focus on the “quick wins” first when a systemic approach is needed. You might look good, but what change are you making? Short-term solutions to problems ingrained over centuries, are doomed to repeat the injustices of the past. “You cannot step on the heads of other marginalized folks while advocating for your own equality. Inclusion must be intersectional to be genuine and effective. It's crucial to recognize that advocating for equality while marginalizing other groups is counterproductive. The examples provided highlight the complexities and nuances within social justice movements. White feminists, racial justice movements, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and discussions around disabilities all underscore the importance of considering intersectionality in our efforts for inclusion. Acknowledging and addressing these intersecting identities and biases are essential steps toward creating truly equitable spaces.
