“Communities want funding partnerships that are predicated on shared values and goals, with dedicated relationship management from the funder and opportunity for the community to have equal say in the direction and scope of the relationship.” Community engagement with Foundation North’s strategy review processes provided a unique opportunity for researchers from our Centre for Social Impact to gather community feedback and perspectives on what enables good funding practice. Insights focus on funding strategy and approaches, funding models and processes, and how to enable system change. https://lnkd.in/gAFnnUua

What happens when you’re toying with a concept that starts to resonate with people more than expected? You start a business to be able to deliver to more communities. I think we can all agree that there is a lot broken about the way local governments and communities try to work with each other, and I believe that a significant part of this is a breakdown in alignment. I have been consistently inspired by the impact and potential of community development being the conduit to address some of this. But at the same time I have consistently felt many tools being used haven’t been fit for purpose, and local governments are talking an entirely different language to the communities they’re here to serve. How are we meant to facilitate alignment when there isn’t alignment in the frameworks and approaches we blend to guide these discussions? So introducing WildRoots Strategic. WildRoots Strategic is focused on bridging the alignment gap between our communities and local governments for more impactful outcomes. I take a nature inspired approach to facilitation, mentoring and strategic thinking for local governments and communities wanting better working relationships. It’s a way of thinking more holistically about the connections and impact we work towards in community ecosystems. Want to learn more? Let’s line up a virtual catchup! I’m keen to chat with those curious about this concept to test and refine my pitch :) #CommunityDevelopment #Facilitation #Community #LocalGovernment

I knew nothing about communities when I started my first one. Not one thing. I had no conversations with other community builders. I read no articles. No books. Mainly because I didn't know I was starting a community. And most definitively because I never set out to build a global community. In my case, ignorance was bliss. Most likely, I would not have started if I had known how steep this learning curve would be. 😅 However, I had one thing that was crucial to keep me going: I needed this community myself, and I have found value there from day 1. Today, I have several conversations each month with people who are thinking of starting a community. And sometimes, overthinking. 😫 Often, people get lost in irrelevant details. And ignore the important pieces. I've built three communities from scratch. And from what I have learned, these are the important pieces. 👇 What else should we add here? 🤔 #community #communitybuilding #communityofpractice #CoP #learningcommunities

What's an uptapped skill or resource you have that you'd like to use more often? A couple of months ago, I had the pleasure of co-leading a 3 day summit on community building and organizing at one of the oldest continually operating community centers in al of Scotland, the Salisbury Center. One of my favorite topics to explore in these contexts is Asset Mapping. Here I am introducing some key aspects of the Asset-Based Community Development approach pioneered by Kretzmann and McKnight. Most of the time service oriented communities form from a needs-based design focus, while this particular mode of community development effort is asset forward, focusing on what fundamental needs can the community address given their pre-existing capacities. The concept is simple in theory, and has significant implications for the vision, strategy, and engagement of any organization that adopts it. Asset Mapping, however, works very synergistically with needs-based development stratagem as well. Historically, I have enjoyed running these mapping exercises with any new team or group that I am working with, because, invariably there are untapped superpowers in any work group, and often inefficiently assigned scopes that can lead to more productive and fulfilling workflows for all parties involved. They are a fun and intuitive way to explore group strengths, and if you ever want to geek out about how to run a workshop like this, or invite me in to run one for you. Drop a line.

Our next Bright Sparks workshop is coming up this Thursday, called Lessons and Values. Lessons and Values is a practical activity that you can use in your community work to understand and solve the problems you face. It's all about identifying the values of the people you work with and applying the lessons from successful actions. For example, perhaps the initial problem is that people with few livelihood options are being fined for cutting down trees in a protected forest, near where they live and that was once a part of their traditional territory. What are the values behind these actions being taken, and the lessons we can learn from them to better understand the stakeholders in a project. This activity can be used in many different types of scenarios, in all thematic areas, and across a variety of project methodologies. When: Thursday 25th July 2024 Time: 4.00 pm to 5.30 pm (AEDT) Where: Online Cost: Single sessions $20.00 +BF Cost: Yearly Pass: $135.00 +BF #GEDSI #Socialinclusion #participatory #facilitation #internationaldevelopment https://lnkd.in/gSZEFRam

🌟 Strategy Spotlight & Funding Opportunity 🌟 Research shows neighborhood associations can help foster social bonds and cohesion as well as build social networks among resident. Even brief or fleeting interactions can help establish familiarity between community members, which can eventually develop into a quality connection and encourage neighborly acts between residents. In our Action Guide for Socially Connected Communities, our promising strategy catalog highlights neighborhood strategies that build upon civic engagement and the built environment to cultivate a connected community! As highlighted in our Built Environment Report, Block Parties, often organized by communities, use street spaces for social events with music, games, and meals - extending streets as a communal living room. We are excited to see the city of Boston encouraging residents to connect with their neighbors and experience the joy of building a stronger community through hosting block parties. If you’re in the Boston area, check out this opportunity to apply for grants to host a block party in your neighborhood! Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through July 31st: https://lnkd.in/g5vY4zyB Check out our Action Guide for promising strategies to build connection in your neighborhood: https://lnkd.in/geRqbGBz Read our Built Environment Report for more strategies to transform shared spaces: https://lnkd.in/ghPqQKz5
