Job Selection - What’s Your Why? One of the many fantastic things to have come out of my ten hours on public transport over the past two days was this magnificent phrase. One I’ve happily borrowed from my old mucker Rob Dixon. What’s your why? Easy for Rob and I at the moment as he’s the Equerry to Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales and I work for Pace where we Harness Human Autonomy, putting people first to create the most efficient, accessible, and scalable operating models for our clients! What’s your why? What’s going to make you get out of bed every morning and be the best you? Why do you want to work? What’s going to motivate you on that rail replacement service?! If you don’t know then you’re unlikely to be looking in the right places for your dream job. If it’s a short term goal then you’re likely to get itchy feet rather earlier than you thought. For example, when I left the military my why was providing for my family. It was a short term aim as I transitioned in to Civvie Street and led to a couple of job changes. Now I’m motivated by my company’s aims - a long term outlook and a much more settled and aspirational one. What’s your why?! Find it and harness it to get that dream job. Onwards! Defence Forces may be on the brink of resolving its recruitment crisis Defence Forces jobs have become more attractive, and Irish Naval Service recruits now get a basic of €39,000, while subsidies mean they only spend €44 a week on meals and lodgings. By Sean O'Riordan / Irish Examiner Could 2024 be the year that the Defence Forces finally turns the tide on its long-running retention and recruitment crisis? Early indications are that personnel numbers are beginning to go in the right direction thanks to increased wages and allowances and the introduction of free healthcare for all military personnel. Remuneration of close to €60,000 for a school-leaver joining the navy should also prove a major boost to its ranks.
