For a few years now, whether it’s been clear or not, gender has become a test to pass or fail. Since 2021 , at least 177 anti-transgender bills have become law in states across the country, according to the Trans Legislation Tracker. And as these bills continue to impact trans lives, we are all taking this new gender test. To understand how the anti-trans agenda could reshape all of our lives, our reporters have set out to examine how anti-trans laws are impacting the lives of Americans, whether or not they are trans. The goal of our reporting series is to connect the dots that will show how these laws, intended to target a small minority, are rewriting the future for all of us, and for generations to come. This is the toll of America’s anti-trans war.

We continuously speak and discuss about total equality in our society. Often, we speak about the discrimination among the genders and how government should work towards laws to provide equal rights for females, how to minimize the male dominance etc etc. But are these enough to make equal society? Let's talk about government first. Ofcourse, they are responsible whether at center or state level, they need to protect the rights. And governments are doing well if not enough. But does every follow it. Giving lectures at various platforms are easy but following the same suit is difficult. If everyone by themselves follow what they want from government, will it be required to make laws. I came across a post where Manipur people were following the traffic rule. Hat was something amazing but is it the case of entire nation. Point is same. Where does everyone stands in fo ng what they want for and from society. Interestingly, everyone speaks about male and female, but what about the third gender, the transgender. Transgenders first gets humiliation from there own parents than the society. And it is never ending. But the question is does the society speaks of their equal rights? When everyone is speaking of equality than transgenders should also be included in the debate. In 2016, Government passed Transgender bill and still they are waiting for the acceptance from the society. They are denied of -Access to goods, facilities, and opportunities available to the public -Right to movement -Right to rent or own property These are the facts that are backed by various data like National Human Rights Commission Survey in 2018, finds that a staggering 96 percent of transgender individuals face employment discrimination; they are often relegated to low-paying or exploitative occupations, such as sex work and panhandling, where 92 percent are denied employment opportunities. In society with equal rights, tremendous work has to be done and for transgenders, perhaps it has to be done from scratch. #transgender #socialwork #equalrights #nonprofit

*Breaking* This afternoon, the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into the 'Equality Bill' (full title: Equality Legislation Amendment (LGBTIQA+) Bill 2023) released their final report. It is available here: https://lnkd.in/gk5bemy8 It made just one recommendation: ‘That the Parliament of NSW proceeds to consider the Equality Legislation Amendment (LGBTIQA+) Bill 2023, including stakeholder input into this inquiry.’ It's disappointing they did not explicitly support the Equality Bill. But, on the other hand, the release of this report also clears any remaining hurdles for the Bill to be considered by NSW Parliament. And it puts the spotlight squarely on the NSW Government, removing any excuses for them not to declare their position on the vital reforms contained in this much-needed legislation. As we (Public Interest Advocacy Centre) state in our media release responding to the Committee's Report: ‘The onus is now on the NSW Government to support the Equality Bill in full. This is crucial legislation that will substantively improve the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and asexual people across NSW.’ Full media release here: https://lnkd.in/gs4dfFjm It's time to ramp up the pressure on the NSW Government, and Parliament, to support legislation that will help drag this state's laws into the 21st century. #auslaw #nswpol #lgbtiq #antidiscriminationact #birthcertificates #transgender

⚖️ Let's talk about equality and dignity ⚖️ ⚖️ Yesterday, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights published a powerful standard-setting report on human rights, gender identity, and gender expression. ⚖️ The new Issue Paper highlights something we already know to be true: trans people deserve the same human rights as everyone else. ⚖️ With the global anti-gender movement loudly arguing otherwise, Commissioner Dunja Mijatović's position is an important source of hope for all of us. ⚖️ This isn’t about special treatment— it’s about having access to basic human rights that everyone is entitled to. ⚖️ Trans people often face marginalisation, discrimination and harassment in both our day-to-day lives and on a structural level. ⚖️ From a lack of access to essentials such as matching identity documentation to appropriate healthcare and protection from violence and hate speech. ⚖️ Urgent action is needed to ensure trans people have the rights and protections that everyone else has. #TransRights #TransRightsAreHumanRights #HumanRightsForAll

Fascism will not stop with transfolk, immigrants, & Palestinians. First they came for Communists I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist Then they came for Socialists I did not speak out Because I was not a Socialist Then they came for trade unionists I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist Then they came for Jews I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew Then they came for me And there was no one left To speak out for me -Martin Niemoller So here we are, active genocide (D & R) active wars (D & R) active bombing of children (D & R) active incarceration of children in cages (D & R) banning transfolk & women's healthcare (R only) active incarceration of transfolk & women for seeking medical care (R only) Direct attacks on life, liberty, & the pursuit of happiness. (D & R) If Palestinians have no right to life (D & R) If immigrants have no right to liberty (D & R) If women & transfolk have no right to life or liberty (R only) Then NO ONE has those rights When rights are conditional, they are not rights; but mere privileges. Treat the rights of EVERYONE like your own, because they are. Genocide wont end with Palestine Incarceration ont end with immigrants, trans, or women You're next Stop fascism NOW before you are the only one left & you are the next target for bombs or prison. Our rights are your rights. Your privilege will not protect you, just ask Martin Niemoller about the slippery slope of fascism. It is always seeking new targets for fun & profit. The prisons need ever more slaves, the bombs need ever more targets & the greedy billionaire power brokers need ever more profits at our expense. There is never enough war, never enough police, never enough prisons, never enough profits. Capitalism can never be satiated, it is endless greed. Elon Musk "needed" another $56 Billion this year alone. Why? He had $200B, but "needed" $56B more? Is that enough for his greed? No, he is still trying to accumulate more green paper that he has 0 use for. Why? Same reason why the fascists wont stop killing & incarcerating slaves. It wont end until WE ALL stop them by removing them all from power. D or R = ever more war, ever more police, ever more bombs, ever more death, ever fewer rights for all of us. ONLY difference? R = incarcerate women & transfolk for needing healthcare D = incarcerate firearms owners (14.2%) for not complying with "regulations" Both incarcerate immigrants (29.6%), drug users (31.3%), prostitutes, "johns", along with actual criminals (25%). ~25% of all incarcerated are an actual criminal threat to society. ~75% of all incarcerated are there for victimless crimes & slave labor profits. The slippery slope of incarceration is decades out of control & only accelerating for profits of prisons. The "land of the free" is the #1 most incarcerated nation on earth. It is only getting worse. Republicans want more women & transfolk behind bars. Democrats want more firearms owners behind bars. Not one more!

While they called for unity, many, including former President DJT and his sons, used their platform to attack and blame transgender people for a variety of imagined issues. This contradiction is not just disappointing; it’s dangerous. Throughout the convention, there was a pattern of ridiculing those who don’t fit into the rigid two-gender binary, falsely accusing us of trying to indoctrinate or sexualize children, and pushing the outdated narrative that we’re a threat to women's sports. These claims are not just baseless—they're harmful and perpetuate misunderstandings that fuel discrimination and violence against our community. The attacks were relentless, from Trump’s declaration about men in women’s sports to Don Jr.’s remarks on gender education and Eric Trump’s fears about male athletes. This anti-trans rhetoric isn’t new, but it’s increasingly alarming given the rising number of hate crimes against LGBTQIA+ people. The constant barrage of misinformation and fear-mongering has real consequences, contributing to a climate where our rights and very existence are under threat. Despite this, it’s crucial to recognize that many Americans don’t support these divisive tactics. Polls indicate a significant portion of the population opposes criminalizing gender-affirming care for minors and doesn’t believe trans issues should be a political focus. However, the rising support for bans on such care shows the insidious impact of sustained anti-trans messaging. The GOP has doubled down on anti-trans positions, signaling a continued commitment to using our community as a political scapegoat. This approach only sows further division and endangers the lives of trans people across the country. As a community, we must continue to stand strong and advocate for our rights, pushing back against the harmful narratives and fighting for a world where everyone is accepted and respected for who they are. It’s a tough battle, but we’re resilient, and together, we can make a difference. And we desperately need our allies in the fight with us. #TransRightsAreHumanRights #TransLivesMatter #StopTransHate #ProtectTransYouth #TransAlly #StandWithTransPeople #FightForEquality #NoMoreHate #InclusionMatters

Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović finds “shockingly high rates of discrimination, violence and insecurity trans people experience in their daily lives” in a report examining human rights of trans people. The report recognises the backsliding of human rights, instrumentalisation of marginalised people for political gain, and the increasing political and social power of anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ+ movements. The Commissioner sets out fifteen recommendations. These are where #Ireland is lacking: 🟰 recognising gender identity and expression in as prohibited grounds in anti-discrimination legislation 🚫 bans on conversion practices ⚖️ including a third legal gender, and reviewing the need for gender markers on documents at all ⚕️ensuring access to high-quality healthcare in line with WHO best practice, i.e. not requiring mental health assessment/diagnosis 🏫 schools should recognise trans young people’s names, pronouns and identities ⚽️ trans people should have equal access to sport participation and competition These are primary policy and advocacy areas for Transgender Equality Network Ireland, so it’s great to see them reflected by the Council! In state capitols nationwide, a barrage of proposals to limit the rights of transgender people are advancing in conservative legislatures even after those kinds of measures fell flat with voters last fall. Just three weeks into the new year, there are at least 300 viable anti-LGBTQ bills being considered by state lawmakers, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, including those that were held over from last year but can still be acted on. “Last year was by far the worst year on record that we’ve seen” for anti-LGBTQ legislation, said Rose Saxe, the deputy project director at the ACLU’s LGBT & HIV Project, noting that 500 measures were introduced across the country last year, and more than 80 became law. “This year is not feeling better. Things are already feeling aggressive in the speed in which legislatures are taking up these issues.” The influx of anti-trans bills, in particular, is jarring, given that Republicans who campaigned on restricting trans rights—such as Kentucky gubernatorial candidate Daniel Cameron and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin who sought Republican majorities in the state legislature—were unsuccessful in last November’s elections. “What you’re seeing play out,” said Brandon Wolf, a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, “is a tug-of-war between the will of the American people and this faction of right-wing extremists who are desperate to use government as a weapon to control the rest of society.” Wolf said proponents of the anti-LGBTQ legislation often describe their interests as protecting children, but now their proposals go far beyond that. A few years ago, lawmakers in Florida wanted to bar transgender girls from youth sports, but that has led to bills pulling books about families with two moms from the shelves of school libraries.

If re-elected to the White House, former President Donald Trump has already floated a federal transition ban — pledging that, on day one, he will sign an “executive order instructing every federal agency to cease the promotion of sex or gender transition at any age.”👿 🏳️⚧️ Trans rights are human rights, and they are essential for the well-being and equality of trans people in society. 🏳️⚧️ 🛡️According to the American Civil Liberties Union, a staggering 300 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have already been introduced in 35 state legislatures around the country (and in Puerto Rico) in 2024. For comparison, by January 19 of last year, independent researcher and Harvard Law instructor Alejandra Caraballo had tracked over 90 anti-LGBTQ+ bills in state legislatures. It's NOT about safety, ...👿 It's NOT about "saving women's sports"....👿 It's a project to roll back the victories of the feminist and gay rights movements and inscribe in law a firm definition and hierarchy of gender. 🏳️⚧️Trans kids deserve to grow up in to trans adults.🏳️⚧️ Safe. Protected. Happy. Supported. Loved for EXACTLY who they are. Trans adults deserve legal recognition of one’s gender identity, access to health care, education, employment, housing, and public facilities, protection from discrimination and violence, and respect for one’s dignity and autonomy. https://lnkd.in/ecJKHzGV #fafo

On 7th October 2024, the Equality Rights Alliance Shadow Report to the CEDAW Committee was submitted to the United Nations ahead of Australia's appearance before the Committee. CEDAW- The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women is the body of independent experts that monitors implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. The Equality Rights Alliance (ERA) CEDAW Shadow Report 2024 addresses several key themes related to gender equality and human rights in Australia, including the lack of comprehensive human rights protection, economic security challenges, violence against women, and health and wellbeing issues. A significant focus is on intersex rights, highlighting ongoing human rights violations such as non-consensual medical interventions on intersex infants and children. The report advocates for legislative reforms to protect intersex individuals’ bodily autonomy and ensure all medical procedures are conducted with informed consent. As the report states, “Intersex people continue to face significant human rights violations, including non-consensual medical interventions. It is imperative that Australia enacts legislation to protect the bodily autonomy of intersex individuals and ensures that all medical procedures are carried out with informed consent.” IHRA was proud to contribute to this report.
