Commemorating the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz's liberation, a solemn ceremony was held today at the Council of Europe. PACE President Theodoros Rousopoulos and Secretary General Alain Berset opened the event, followed by a moving testimony from Chief Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, the youngest survivor of the Buchenwald concentration camp and President of the Yad Vashem Memorial. Affectionately called "Lulek" by his parents and being only 7 years old, he was sent to Buchenwald and separated from his mother. He vividly recalls the moment she waved at him for the last time. The ceremony ended with a moment of reflection and wreath-laying at the Holocaust memorial on the forecourt of the Palais de l’Europe. #HolocaustRemembrance #WeRemember #NeverForget

#OnThisDay in 1977, the Palais de l'Europe, headquarters of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, was inaugurated by Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, then President of the French Republic. The Palais was designed by the architect Henry Bernard. The entrance of the square building is flanked by the flags of the Council's member states. The outer layer of the Palais is a mosaic of contrasted colours, which are found on the concrete of the buttresses, the aluminium-covered façade and the vast windows of the conference rooms respectively. In front of the Palais, the lawn was once the site of the predecessor to the Palais de l'Europe – the Maison de l'Europe. #HistoryAtHeart #HumanRights #Democracy #RuleOfLaw #Strasbourg

Today and everyday #WeRemember and pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945. The Holocaust is the name given to the systematic murder of six million Jews by the Nazi regime and their allies during the Second World War. “Holocaust” is a Greek word meaning “sacrifice by fire”. Jewish people also refer to it as the “Shoah”. For the Nazis, the objective of the so-called “Final Solution” was the killing of all Jews in Europe. While most of the victims died in concentration camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau, many perished at the hands of mobile death squads and others in ghettos like the one in Warsaw. #HolocaustRemembranceDay #NeverAgain #NeverForget

On the morning of 27 January 1945, at Auschwitz-Birkenau, only about 7,000 prisoners were still alive, while more than a million people had perished there. It is estimated that six million Jews were exterminated in the death camps. Ida Grinspan (1929-2018) was one of the survivors of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camps. The Holocaust was one of the reasons why the Council of Europe was set up in 1949, just four years after the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The aim was to prevent such a genocide happening again in Europe, and to ensure that human life and human rights would be respected, no matter what the person’s nationality, ethnicity, race, religion or sexual orientation. #WeRemember #NeverAgain #HolocaustRemembranceDay
