Desperate times call for desperate measures! During my entrepreneurial journey between 2011-14, when my fund raising efforts seemed to have almost reached a dead end, I did the unimaginable- sent an unsolicited mail to the richest man in Asia!! It has been a long gap of about 6 months since I wrote the last article. As a matter of continuity for the regular readers, and a quick context for the new ones, I have been writing about experiences from my entrepreneurial journey. A journey that did not reach its desired destination- a venture that failed. Nonetheless, the learnings and experiences from this journey are priceless. ✍ Have been planning to write this for sometime now. Being working with startups and evaluating startups, I see that many founders (with companies at pre-revenue and early revenue stage) have been struggling with planning marketing expenses and more so on projecting marketing costs for their business plan. 🛫 Customer Acquisition Costs (CACs) play a pivotal role in the success journey of startups. Understanding and optimizing CACs can make or break growth prospects. Here’s why it matters and what founders should do to lower them: 1️. Strategic Investment 💵 : CAC directly impacts profitability and scalability. Startups must strategically allocate resources to efficient customer acquisition channels that yield high-quality leads. Thus, understanding that the quality of customer basis AOV, CM1, repeat and tracking it back to the channel of acquisition is of utmost importance. 2. Personalization and Segmentation 📊 : Take Zomato, for instance, which by leveraging data analytics to segment users and personalize promotions, optimized CAC and accelerated growth. 3. Customer Retention 😀 : Building long-term customer relationships is key. Companies like CRED focus on enhancing user experience and rewards programs to lower churn rates and increase lifetime value, thereby optimizing CAC. Developing a hook for customers to come back again (loyalty, wallets, cashback, sale events) will reduce CACs drastically. 4. Innovative Marketing 🔬 : Nykaa's success in the beauty eCommerce sector illustrates effective CAC management. They utilized influencer partnerships and content marketing to cultivate a loyal customer base, reducing overall acquisition costs. Also important is to understand the right set of influencers and do the same exercise of influencer vs quality of customer. And over and above all of these is the quality of customer experience & quality of product. All of the above steps will fail if these two are not under control.
