There I was at night, knocking on the purchasing agent’s door after just losing a big order. Crazy? Maybe. But, that’s exactly what I did in 1994.
Newmont Gold had just told me that we lost an order for 1450’ x 36” wide 4 ply 600# 3/8 “ x 1/8 “ with Goodyear Premarc Covers to our far bigger competitor, Fairmont Supply, out of Salt Lake City.
I was furious.
It wasn’t right.
And, I was determined to make it right.
So, on my way home, after finishing a belting job, I asked my Dad to turn around, and drive to the head purchasing agent’s house, Dave Ulrich.
I knocked on his door.
The porch light came on.
I apologized for bothering him late in the evening.
Then I told him the story of the lost sale, and asked him:
“Do you support the local companies doing business? Or do you support the corporate America office?”
He changed the order the next day.
That was a ballsy move. But a little initiative and persistence can go a long way.
In my case, it paid off in a big way.
That's why I say– don't be afraid to ask for what you want.
Because when you don’t, the answer is automatically no.
When you do, miracles just might happen.
Now, I’d love to hear about a tough question you’ve asked that got an incredible response. Share in the comments.
