It’s sad to see this when there have been so many advances in #digital and #decentralized health #technology and #AI to reduce these challenges and burdens that can be leveraged as solutions. - More hospitals are shedding services, including #chemotherapy and labor and delivery, due to #financial strain and #staffing challenges. - Between 2014 and 2022, 382 rural hospitals halted chemotherapy services, Texas had the highest percentage of rural hospitals that eliminated chemotherapy services at 47%. Next came Alabama (46%), Mississippi (45%), Tennessee (44%), and Florida (39%). - Only eight states — Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Utah and Vermont — did not see a chemotherapy service close, according to the report. #Rural #patients have lower five-year #survival rates after a #cancer diagnosis compared to their urban counterparts. #cancercare

I want to discuss what I have been seeing recently in my clinics and the conversations within my personal circle as I've observed a concerning trend: an increasing number of younger patients, under 50 years old, being investigated for and diagnosed with bowel cancer. This observation isn't isolated, as studies and data have been pointing to a significant rise in early-onset colorectal cancer across the globe. Research indicates that the incidence of colorectal cancer has been steadily increasing among adults younger than 50 since the 1990s. What's particularly alarming is that this rise comes at a time when colorectal cancer rates have been declining among older adults, largely due to effective screening programmes. This trend suggests a shift in the demographic profile of this disease, warranting a closer look at our current screening guidelines and lifestyle factors contributing to this increase. This growing incidence in younger populations demonstrates the critical importance of listening to our bodies and seeking medical advice when something feels off, no matter how minor it may seem. Common symptoms of bowel cancer, such as changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, and unexplained weight loss, should not be overlooked. I want to emphasise to everyone, especially those under 50, that you're not "wasting our time" by seeking medical help. Early detection can significantly impact treatment outcomes and survival rates. If you or someone you know experiences any symptoms that could indicate bowel cancer, please consult a healthcare professional. Millions of individuals are missing out on essential cancer screenings due to significant healthcare disparities. Recent research highlights the screening gap between federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) and the general population. FQHCs primarily serve low-income, marginalized, and uninsured patients, constituting 62.2% from racial and ethnic minority groups. The study revealed that FQHCs had substantially lower screening rates for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers compared to the overall population. Proposed strategies include Medicaid expansion, improved reimbursement, and increased funding for cancer screening initiatives. Optimizing screening at FQHCs could significantly impact minority groups' overall screening rates, addressing existing inequities in healthcare. #HealthcareDisparity #CancerScreenings #HealthEquity #MinorityHealth #FQHCs #HealthcareAccess

Racial disparities in access to palliative care are an issue that needs attention. There are several factors to account for the such as socioeconomic status, cultural beliefs, and healthcare system biases. Addressing these disparities is crucial to ensure equitable access to palliative care for all individuals. “National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines for palliative care recommend all patients with cancer be screened to determine their palliative care needs, both at intake and throughout treatment…” I think the first step should be to ensure that there is a palliative care service that is easily accessible and integrated into the healthcare system. #palliative #pallitivemedicine #palliativecare #hpm #hapc #palliatievezorg #soinspalliatif #cuidadospaliativos
