A new situation to share with businesses, chambers of commerce, and law enforcement:
Event: A regional AKC dog show and sporting events.
Attendee: A disabled groomer with a service dog who travels the country to state events, and occasionally enters his service dog in various events (dock diving, agility, etc.).
Problem: The city’s chamber of commerce put out a policy to hotels that service dogs don’t compete in events, and are then considered the same as pets.
Fact check: False, this was bad information that could have ended in a law suit with the Department of Justice in violation of ADA, and depending on state law, another suit
Outcome: Thankfully the groomer/service dog handler chose to remain calm and provide education to hotel staff and the chamber. If the disabled person is able, or if a third party works with the service dog to compete at these types of events - it’s ok. And it’s still a service dog (SD), specially trained to perform specific task(s), and when able to use an event to hone those skills and have some fun being a dog it just improves the performance and capabilities of the dog.
