The 405th AFSB will officially unfurl the colors of Army Field Support Battalion-Poland and take mission command of the LTESM-C soon. Army strength falls below 6,000 for first time in living memory In the first half of this year, 338 personnel left the Defence Forces while just 240 were recruited. The army now has only 5,959 members, some 1,500 less than the minimum strength. By Sean O’Riordon / Irish Examiner The strength of the army has dropped below 6,000 for the first time in living memory and now stands 1,500 fewer than the absolute minimum the force should have. The latest figures also show more people continue to leave the Defence Forces than join it. In response to queries from the Irish Examiner, the Defence Forces press office confirmed that, as of June 30, the total strength of the country’s military has fallen to 7,399, which is 2,100 short of the minimum it should have. Personnel numbers have consistently fallen every year since 2015 and there are now nearly 2,000 fewer personnel than then. At the end of last year, the strength of the army was 6,136, the air corps was at 689, and the naval service 725. A total of 758 left the Defence Forces last year either due to forced retirement on age grounds, resignation, or on medical grounds. However, in 2023 they were only able to bring in 415 recruits. Steven Gambichler & I were laughing the other day that nobody wants to play Call-of-Duty: Logistics. After Admin or #Finance, I find #Logistics to be the most boring possible topic in the #Military & I can’t imagine why anyone willfully joins the US Army to do logistics when there’s so many more interesting things to do. That being said, despite being incredibly boring to me, logistics is also the foundation for everything else. #Leaders ignore logistics at their peril. Luckily for military managers, there’s pretty much no consequences in the #Army for mission failure or incompetence. I’d never say that I can fluently speak logistics, but I like to think I can understand what’s being said when people are speaking logistics. So when there’s no warm & fuzzy on the boring details of how the right things will appear at the right time at the right place, I start getting antsy.

**Current and future Commanders out there** The Army offers an amazing opportunity for soldiers transitioning to the civilian sector called the Career Skills Program (CSP). It helps set them up for success in their next chapter. It is a critical resource especially for junior soldiers who are embarking on this journey blind and at risk for an unsuccessful transition. Unfortunately, I am seeing a growing trend for commands to deny soldiers or intentionally create obstacles to hinder their pursuit. I would be willing to wager that those same teams plan to use the benefit themselves when they transition though. I ask that we as a force change this aspect of our military culture. When viewed through a holistic lens; this is the foundation of “taking care of our soldiers”. From an organizational perspective prior service makes up the bulk of our recruiting efforts and unsuccessful transitions continue to push the bell-curve downwards.
