"The true power of the arts is the ability to make the invisible visible. It's an immensely powerful thing." Award-winning actor and author Paterson Joseph mentioned this during yesterday's The City Club of Cleveland "Diversifying the Media Production Industry" panel discussion. Paradoxically, we're in an era where the greatest access to information and knowledge is being coupled with a movement attempting to sensor -- and in some cases outright erase -- history and said access. Yesterday's discussion was a powerful display of why the arts continue to be a direct line to culture and history and why they are more vital today than ever before. The importance of elevating and participating in the arts is not only a guaranteed way to experience diverse cultures and backgrounds, but also the quickest and purest way to leverage and celebrate our differences. For example, being in the crowd of an Indigenous performance by Kenneth Shirley (panelist - Indigenous Enterprise, LLC) will circumvent barriers that reading a book may offer and instead directly allow you to experience the culture. There's nothing (and no one) in between you and experiencing Indigenous culture. This was the lightbulb moment for me yesterday while listening to these panelists (Patterson, Kenneth, and Gabriela Muñoz). Yes, the threats against our diverse history and knowledge are real, but the arts afford everyone an avenue to have first-hand diverse experiences devoid of barriers. If you're in the crowd, nothing is coming between you and your cultural experience. BorderLight Theatre Festival's 2024 Festival is live in Cleveland now through July 27. Their mission: to present innovative theatre that inspires, builds cross-cultural understanding, and celebrates the diversity of the human experience. If you're in the Cleveland area, now is the time to participate and celebrate our differences and the human experience. Check out their website for a complete schedule and for more information: https://lnkd.in/gX-jpuVB (Great to meet you, Rachel Costanzo! Keep up the great work!) #Culture #Diversity #Arts #Cleveland

Did You Know? Before its transformation into the Empire Arts Center, it was first called the New Grand. The New Grand stood as the first theatre in Grand Forks designed specifically for showing motion pictures. Currently, the Empire is the city's last surviving downtown movie house! I have discovered a new form of team builder:
Can I promote a play on here? I'm so thrilled to be a part of the incredible cast of "An Experiment with an Air Pump" at The Island Theater. Opening night is just 4 days away, with performances May 3-12. We've been working hard to make sure we do this script justice—one that fearlessly explores issues of ethics and gender and art and science, and demands its audience do the same. I'm biased, sure, but it really is a great one! If you're in the Jacksonville area, come out to The Island Theater this weekend or next to support me and us and the performing arts. Tickets are on sale now at www.theislandtheater.com. (FYI this show is not for children.)

100 Seats for Misfits: Do you have your ticket? I loved how Myah described her Company: 'It's a training ground for the misfit.' A misfit is someone who does not fit easily within a particular group or environment—I’ve been a misfit all my life. What about you? A misfit is someone whose behavior or attitudes differ from the norms of the group they are in, making them stand out or sometimes feel out of place. I bet you have felt out of place at one point or another too. I don’t call myself the 'accidental banker' because I fit perfectly in this world—I am a misfit. Isn’t it great when you find a group, an organization, or a friend where being yourself is celebrated? That’s exactly what they are doing with this program. I call this kind of program a training ground for the underdog. I refer to this type of effort as 'the but for.' But for an initiative like this, people who are looking to find their way wouldn’t get the exposure that could be the tipping point directing them toward their purpose! I, for one, am all for giving people platforms and positioning them to reach the next level. I want to celebrate these ‘misfits’—will you join me? The auditorium holds 100 people—let’s pack it! The arts are crucial for sparking creativity and passion, and I hope to see you there. Let me know if you will join me—I will be attending. Myah, thank you for your leadership.
