I just googled to find out the typical IT staff size for small and mid-sized companies. The answers I got were all over the board ranging from a 1:18 ratio (meaning 1 IT staff for every 18 employees) to 1:175. In my experience, a company with less than 50 employees usually doesn't have any full-time IT staff - they rely on managed service providers and contractors like me instead. Between 50 and 125 is when they typically start to think about adding a staff position, but they will still need to augment with providers/contractors, since one person doesn't have the breadth of knowledge to cover all network + hardware + software. So, as a contractor, my target audience is probably companies with less than 200 employees, since they still probably need to augment IT staff with providers/contractors. I'd love to hear other perspectives on this - am I in the ball park?

I keep hearing feedback from a few former colleagues and friends on the state of the nation in terms of the workforce in their current roles and the same following observations keep being made: 💡1. Staff are generally lazy and unproductive and barely achieve their targets. 💡2. Remote workers in certain organisations are the most underperforming because they want to hide away and do as little as possible. 💡3. Offshore consultancies are often cheap labour and largely lack the required skills and the willingness to learn specialist subject areas unless it's Oracle database, SQL, Azure, or industry standard stuff. 💡4. Communication skills have dwindled from all stakeholders whether internal staff or offshore workers who sometimes have limited English skills or perhaps just a language barrier. 💡5. HR seems to interfere with people's ability to do their jobs rather than spend their time getting involved in the recruitment of high-quality individuals. 💡6. Hiring managers are not engaging correctly with the market and not bringing in the required talent to fulfill the project demands and timelines. These are some of the same things I keep hearing repeatedly from different people in different sectors working across IT projects right now in the UK. It is very frustrating to hear when you are struggling to get back into the workforce and know you can do better!
