United Airlines became the first airline to bulk purchase sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF) for its Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) - O'Hare & Midway International Airports (#ORD) operations. The airline has secured up to one million US gallons of #SAF from industry leader Neste, with the first deliveries scheduled for August 2024. 📆 The agreement with Neste designates Chicago O'Hare as the fifth US airport where United will utilize SAF across its domestic, regional, and international routes. British Airways is embarking on a multi-million-pound investment programme to overhaul its ground support equipment at Heathrow Airport https://lnkd.in/e-p-Czy9 #Air101 #avgeek #travel #aviation #fyp #BritishAirways #IAG #Heathrow #LHR #Hybrid The airline will gradually be replacing its ground vehicles at Heathrow, such as vans and cars, cargo transporters and passenger steps, moving towards hybrid or electric alternatives where available. Already, more than 90% of British Airways’ vehicles and ground equipment at Heathrow are either zero emissions electrical equipment when being used or driven, (hybrids) or are operating on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel.

Notes from the road: While aviation-related travel accounts for “only” 2.5%-4% of global CO2 emissions, HOW one elects to fly can have a material impact on those numbers. I’m on my way to New York at the moment and had a number of options to get there (airlines, airplanes, # of stops…etc. - no train this time, unfortunately). I went with a Qantas flight from Sydney to Auckland and then non-stop to JFK on a Boeing 787-900. Opting for economy instead of business class, the CO2 “spend” ends up being a mere 26% of that in the premium cabin at an astonishing 1/7th of the ticket price. Air New Zealand has decided to abandon its 2030 emissions reduction target due to challenges with fuel-efficient aircraft deliveries and high green fuel prices. Despite this setback, the airline remains committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and is developing a new near-term goal. The last train to arrive at Dublin airport 30 years ago 9th June 1994. These loco's are still going strong on Irish Rail network. Latest iteration is (I believe) hydrogen and HVO testing. Well done Irish Rail. Dublin Airport Passenger limits need to become aviation #carbonbudgets asap (PAX limits incentivise long haul over vital EU connectivity). Heavy rail to Dublin airport is key to a sustainable transport system in Ireland (the island as a whole). 🤔 If we could ship a loco by air in 1994, surely we can build a heavy rail link around Dublin via airport to connect Cork and rest of Irish Rail network in 2020's? i.e. Derry & Belfast, Kerry / Galway / Limerick to Dublin Airport by rail (20+% of Dublin Airport PAX already go by bus). Metro is for Swords not airport no matter how people want to stretch it (welcome - but does not move Ireland as whole forward).

🛫 Today, CUR8 is delighted to announce a landmark deal with British Airways to buy and manage a $11 million portfolio of 33,000 high quality carbon removal credits. The deal represents the largest purchase of durable carbon removal by any UK business, and makes British Airways the largest purchaser among global airlines. It also signifies one of the largest multi-year commitments by any business to purchase from a balanced portfolio of carbon removal projects. This initiative recognises the pivotal role that carbon removals will play in decarbonising aviation and similarly hard-to-abate sectors. BA anticipates that one-third of its net-zero pathway to 2050 will be delivered through carbon removals, with the rest coming from aircraft, operational efficiencies and sustainable aviation fuels. CUR8 will manage a portfolio of six innovative global projects, each designed to overcome barriers in carbon removal and support BA's net-zero goals. Announcing that we now have British Airways as a client of The Great Reserve! As part part of a porfolio of carbon credit purchases pulled together by our friends at CUR8 and Treeconomy, British Airways have purchased our Sequoia Carbon Pending Units, which will over the coming years deliver carbon removal within our Giant Sequoia (aka Redwood) trees planted in the UK. This was no normal carbon credit purchase, instead taking a particularly innovative approach to nature based carbon removal. Our Sequoias take time to grow (like all trees), however they can live for thousands of years providing an ultra durable carbon sink. At the suggestion of Treeconomy they decided to stack our ultra durable carbon solution on top of faster delivering but less durable alternative nature based solutions. The combination of short term delivery and long term durability make for a impactful and genuinely viable nature based solution, often absent from standalone projects. We are excited to see this innovative strategy develop further in years to come and are delighted to see British Airways blazing the trail!
