This is a lesson for heritage institutions that do not prioritize proper record keeping over other budget items. Too many museums limit the care of their objects by overworking their collection staff or just understaffing. Every organization needs to really look at where the time and money is best used in order to protect the collection. Invest the time! Invest the money! This a lesson moment not a blame moment.

Because of Haben Girma’s post I will pay more attention to access options with museums that I visit. The range and development of artists work is fascinating

As people contemplate their summer holidays, I put forward the suggestion that if you enjoy history there is no place like London. The British Museum (and the myriad of war, airplane and castle based museums) is mind boggling as at the height of their power, the empire merrily “collected” treasures from every corner of the world. In my opinion, the only rival would be the “collected” pieces that are stuffed into every corner of the Vatican (The irony of Greek gods everywhere is something to behold). The below gives a brief glimpse into a few of the treasures they hold and a small sliver of the fascinating history.

Venus of Milo Exhibition Started (1964) On 8 April 1820, on the Aegean island of Milos, the Greek farmer Yorgos Kentrotas dug out pieces of stone on the island. When put together, they formed a standing statue of a beautiful woman. Venus of Milo Discovered. Yorgos hid it from detection but the statue was discovered and confiscated by the Ottoman officials who ruled the island. The French ambassador to Turkey, the Marquis de Rivière, bought from the Ottoman and next, a French naval admiral asked for it. After being presented to Louis XVIII, it was donated to the Louvre in 1821, where it found a permanent home. On 8 April 1964, a special exhibition opened at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo. The Asahi Shimbun newspaper obtained permission from the French Government to exhibit the work in Japan, taking advantage of the fact that the Tokyo Olympics, an event of Greek origin, were to be held in the autumn of that year. The exhibition attracted 831,198 visitors in Tokyo until 15 May, and was on display at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art from 21 May to 25 June, attracting a total of 1.72 million visitors to the two museums. https://lnkd.in/gKBsACqm This was the sole opportunity that the exhibition was shown outside France. Japanese newspaper companies have correspondents abroad and build up a strong network of contacts with embassy staff and others. It is therefore not unusual for newspapers to organise touring exhibitions. Exhibitions in Japan are of limited duration and are heavily promoted by the organising newspapers and affiliated TV stations, which is why visitors are often swamped, making it difficult to appreciate the artworks at a leisurely pace. Rothko's work is characterized by rigorous attention to formal elements such as color, shape, balance, depth, composition, and scale; yet, he refused to consider his paintings solely in these terms. He explained: "It is a widely accepted notion among painters that it does not matter what one paints as long as it is well painted. This is the essence of academicism. There is no such thing as a good painting about nothing." Looking forward to visiting the exhibit!
