Growing up in Ghana, art, music, folklore and cuisine have all been part of a vibrant tapestry of traditions and customs dating back centuries. As an ethnically diverse country with over 100 ethnic groups, one thing most Ghanaians align on is the power of dance and music in bringing people from across the globe together. I was proud to witness this culture brought to the fore here in Switzerland as Ghana kicked off the first reception event of the 2024 WIPO Assemblies. The performance also brought back fond memories of time spent in my hometown, and how culture can unite and thrive with these vivid expressions and traditional knowledge, demonstrating how each telling can be widely perceived, but still is unique and personal. Intellectual property is the lifeblood of these traditions, as it helps to protect cultural heritage, as well as creativity and innovation- key to national development. Ghana is signatory to several WIPO-administered treaties, including the most recently concluded International Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge. This Treaty, approved by consensus amongst Member States, is the first WIPO Treaty related to IP and Indigenous Peoples, marking a multilateral advancement and historic breakthrough that capped decades of negotiations. Intellectual property laws cannot capture the spirit of our heritage, but they can certainly play a vital role in preserving and protecting these invaluable assets, benefiting both creators and society as a whole. Striking a balance between professional aspirations and personal passions can indeed be a daunting task. The economy of Nigeria is “heating” everyone, Naira is no longer valuable as it used to be. Everyday on social media we encounter numerous creatives expressing their concerns about the escalating prices of art materials. We acknowledge the difficulty of concentrating solely on artistry, particularly for Africans and, more specifically, Nigerians, given the necessity of having an income to support art creation. Despite these challenges, we understand the difficulty of completely abandoning one's passion. Hence, it's recommended to engage in side jobs that provide additional income. This advice is particularly relevant to artists, as it's understood that artwork does not sell on a daily basis. We are eager to hear from you.
