Hello All We're excited to share that we will be taking on apprentices! We intend to have two based at Woolsbridge and one at Bodmin. They will be completing Lifting equipment technician apprenticeships that have been developed alongside the LEEA, and working within our engineering teams. As you know we have many areas of expertise beyond the already diverse area of lifting equipment, including industrial doors, rigging, gates, barriers, marine, defence, and more. Successful applicants will have a fantastic opportunity to start a career in engineering with experience in this broad range of engineering activities and disciplines. It’s National Apprenticeship Week 2024, where we recognise our commitment to training future ready skills. Hady Samrah is in his second year of an Automotive - Mobile Plant Technology apprenticeship, working under the watchful eye of our Mechanic, Darrel Le Lant. Of his experience at Gremalco, Hady said: “I’ve always had an interest in mechanics so it was an obvious choice for me to do an apprenticeship. Day to day I get involved with servicing and repairs or fault finding on a wide range of construction machinery and vehicles. Every day is different, I can be in the workshop or out on site. I’m also learning extra skills like fabrication and machining from Darrel.” Gremalco strongly believes in developing from within to ensure a pipeline of capable and skilled workers. We are proud of our tradies, Darrel Le Lant, Matt Benson and Reg Prasad, who dedicate their time to train and mentor our apprentices.

What to expect going from one job to another? There is a good chance, if you get into a blue collar apprenticeship (especially a union one) that you will get transferred from one job to another job to get hours in a different field within that trade. If you look at the lineman trade for example, people may think "oh you work on powerlines." Well yes, but there are many different powerlines to work on. Inside an IBEW lineman apprenticeship, you have to get "x" amount of hours in the different categories within the trade. Get hours in; transmission, overhead distribution (cold hours, hot hours), substation, underground... ...it equals out to a well rounded 7,000 hour/3-4 year apprenticeship so you can become a journeymen with the proper experience. So, getting transferred to a new crew, different job, new company is going to happen. What should you expect when that time comes? What would you tell a new apprentice? From Electrical Technician to Reactive Maintenance Manager, Linda Kilvert’s career took an exciting twist when offered the first female engineering apprenticeship at Mawdsleys in 1974. Although challenging to enter a male-dominated field, Linda didn’t let that stop her and with determination and hard work, proved that gender doesn’t define success in any field! 👩🔧 Through the apprenticeship, Linda gained not just technical engineering skills but the invaluable ability to collaborate with diverse teams, communicate effectively and think outside the box 📦, igniting a passion in Engineering and formed the foundations of a lifelong career in the sector.
