How should you show up at an association event or conference? I had the privilege of attending the LeadingAge California BOLD Age Annual Conference this week. Jeannee Parker Martin, Kevin Tuuaga, Soua Vang, and so many others orchestrated a remarkable environment that fostered learning, growth, and most importantly, a sense of community among industry professionals. As a sales professional, I've often pondered about the best way to approach these events. What are my priorities? What do I hope to gain? What can I contribute? These questions have led me to some valuable insights over the years. Let me offer three suggestions . . . 1) Focus on making friends. Over the course of the 10 years that I have attended this conference, I've made lifelong friends. Individuals who would share a meal with me, visit me in the hospital if I was sick, and join me in celebrating some of the significant accomplishments of my life. This is the real value of these conferences—the friendships you develop over the years. 2) Make a contribution. Mary Muñoz from Ziegler received the Award of Honor because of her contribution to the association and its members over her long and distinguished career. I was inspired by how she “led to” and worked with the members side by side to elevate the experience of older adults. Yes, she sold her service and earned some business along the way, but not because of her slick one-minute pitch, but because she used her gifts, skills, and abilities to make a contribution to the members of the association. 3) Offer encouragement. Instead of leading with what you do, commend others for their work, their contribution to the industry, and their impact on others' lives. Most people don’t hear those things often enough (thank you, Tiffany Karlin) Play the long game. Invest. Help. Encourage. Support. And then, I think you'll find that good business, the right business, comes as a result.

On Monday, start the day with breakfast, followed by the Industry Leadership Summit, where major announcements will be made. Attendees can then dive into a series of education sessions covering topics such as trade-in valuation, handling price objections, and improving parts department performance. Be sure to take advantage of dealership veteran Patrick Weekley from Spader Business Management/NCM Associates in this session titled “Buying Better in Parts by Focusing on Inventory Categories” that will focus on using Categories to improve Parts department performance. Networking opportunities, breaks, and a hosted dinner round out the day's activities. Tuesday features additional educational sessions focused on optimizing parts inventory management, pre-owned sales, and enhancing the customer experience. Attendees will also have opportunities for networking, with hosted meals and exhibitor showcases, concluding with a final wrap-up and closing announcements. Well that will be us up there on the short list for best integrated campaign 👊 from the world renowned and prestigious The Drum Awards As part of our marketing transformation, 12 months ago we set ourselves an ambition to get some marketing swagger (aka a hefty gold embellishment for our newly installed and ambitiously big trophy cabinet). Not for the party (don’t get me wrong we like a party) but as recognition from industry gurus, creative pundits, marketing maestros that our work is as good as our customers (and our stats) say. Do those who pay to be featured on lists or highlighted in special issues also believe in participation trophies? Why should I pay someone to publish me? Why would I want to pay to be on a list? It’s hard to take seriously those who claim to be the best in the business, yet pay a media company to boost their reputation. Is there even a legitimate list that truly recognizes the excellence of some of these partners? What's stopping you from entering your event or your company for an award this season? You worked hard to produce a fantastic event. Now it’s time to get the recognition you deserve; you are ready to enter either the ACE Awards, which are more geared towards caterers, or the Gala Awards, which feature categories for all types of events and producers.   Winning an award, and even receiving a nomination, has myriad benefits: * Build team morale within your company and with your creative partners * A nomination and win are tantamount to a third-party endorsement * The write-ups can be repurposed for content for months to come * It looks great in all your promotional material But, for some reason, the deadline comes and goes and so does another year for your chance to win an award.
