As we near the end of National Apprenticeship Week, Dan Aston shares his pathway to finding out what he was passionate about. "I left school at 16 and started working on building sites as brick layers labourer. After two years of site work where I was able to experience different trades, I pursued my interest in electrical engineering with an electrical apprenticeship. Following four years on site, I became a trainee electrical engineer completing my ONC and HNC in building services. I now produce the electrical designs for buildings and have worked at Ramboll for three years. "For anyone considering an apprenticeship, I would advise them to have a clear goal or output of what they want out of the course, whether that be to aid them in their direct career path or help them understand what others around them expect from their job role. Secondly, it’s crucial your employer and line manager buy in and agree with the apprenticeship. Having a good mentor or role model is key for success. Your time will need to be split across your workload and the apprenticeship, being exposed to new experiences to practise your lessons learnt". Apprenticeships play a massive role in not just shaping individual careers but also in sustaining communities through economic transitions. In the heart of Port Talbot, a town shadowed by the recent announcement of 2,800 job cuts at Tata Steel, apprentices like Kieran and Jay embody the enduring spirit of a community facing economic adversity. Kieran, an 18-year-old engaged in a mechanical engineering apprenticeship, follows a family tradition stretching back generations in the steelworks. Despite the looming uncertainty, his commitment to the apprenticeship highlights the resilience and optimism that apprenticeships inject into communities. Apprenticeships have long been a cornerstone in building skilled workforces, particularly in industries like steel manufacturing. They offer a unique blend of practical experience and theoretical learning, essential for industries undergoing rapid technological and economic changes. For towns like Port Talbot, these programs are not just pathways to employment; they represent a lifeline for the community's economic and social fabric. The situation at Tata Steel, while challenging, also opens a window into the adaptive nature of apprenticeships. Jay, like Kieran, is in the first year of a four-year apprenticeship with Tata. His perspective on the potential job losses speaks volumes about the resilience apprenticeships foster. He believes the skills developed in these programs will be in demand elsewhere, underscoring the versatility and value of the training received. Institutions such as Grŵp Colegau NPTC Group of Colleges, which is mentioned in the article, play a significant role in this ecosystem. Kathryn Dunstan from NPTC Colleges noted a "flurry of excitement" among students when Tata released apprentice applications. Despite the current challenges, the promise of new initiatives in Neath Port Talbot, like the Global Centre for Rail Excellence and offshore wind generation plans, offer hope and opportunity. The Swansea Bay City Region, despite the setbacks from the job cuts, remains focused on developing the local economy and creating quality jobs. As Chairman Rob Stewart emphasises, the region is committed to supporting young people in pursuing diverse career opportunities. As National Apprenticeship Week approaches, I believe that the coming year will be a huge one for apprenticeship providers - particularly given Labour's focus on what apprenticeships can offer. I would love to speak to more in the sector and hear your plans for the year ahead.

Brilliant to have Finlay on board! #apprenticeships are a great way to introduce the next generation to the MEICA sector. #nationalapprenticeshipweek
It’s National Apprenticeship Week! We’re big supporters of the apprenticeship scheme, and today we caught up with our newest recruit Finlay Butler to learn more about his apprenticeship journey with STAL. Finlay is 19 and began his 3-year apprenticeship in Mechanical and Electrical Installations with STAL in September. He originally started a design-based apprenticeship but switched to a more hands-on role. He attends Skipton College every Monday, and the rest of the week he’s out in the field with his STAL colleagues. We asked him to describe a typical day. He said: "I’m always out in the field rather than in an office. I enjoy this as I wanted to do work which was practical and physical. I get to do a wide range of stuff - one day I might be PAT testing, another doing pipework or steelwork, or electrical containment and domestic electrics.” Sean Connolly, Managing Director of STAL commented: “We are enthusiastic about giving apprentices the chance to work in the MEICA sector. We find it’s a great way to train and develop people so they have exactly the skills we need. Finlay has a great future with STAL and we look forward to supporting his continuing professional development.” If you’d like to know more about job opportunities or apprenticeships with STAL, get in touch. #nationalapprencticeshipweek #nationalapprencticeshipweek2024 #NAW2024 #skillsforlife #Apprentices #Apprenticeships #MEICA #STALUK

This week is National Apprenticeship Week - a celebration of the contribution that apprenticeships can make to workforce development and economic growth. There are many skilled people across the business who started their careers as apprentices, either at KPM UK or elsewhere. We currently have two employees completing and one starting their apprenticeships: Mark Pellow - Production Engineer, is studying a Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship alongside a manufacturing degree. "Navigating my apprenticeship alongside my engineering degree has proven to be both demanding and fulfilling. This dual commitment has not only sharpened my hands-on skills and technical ability but has significantly enriched my academic journey by exposing me to diverse aspects of the engineering industry. Through hands-on and technical experience with in-depth research, I've developed a well-rounded perspective that integrates with both my coursework and professional work." Tyler Hodges - QA Apprentice Technical Support Technician, is studying towards Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacture and Engineering and is due to complete his apprenticeship in 2025. "Embarking on an engineering apprenticeship has been transformative for me. The hands-on experience has not only honed my practical skills but also allowed me to seamlessly apply theoretical knowledge in real-world projects. The mentorship I've received is invaluable, providing insights that go beyond textbooks. An apprenticeship not only immerses me in practical applications but also exposes me to diverse challenges, fostering problem-solving skills. The collaborative environment encourages teamwork and effective communication, crucial skills in the professional realm." Sam Richards-Wilcox - Having completed his Level 3 Mechanical Manufacture Apprenticeship, Sam is about to embark on his Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship. #pmg #kawasaki #poweringyourpotential #kpmuk #nationalapprenticeshipweek #hydraulicengineering #makeuk
