🗓️ This week, as summer internship season is coming to a close, we take an in-depth look at which interns are likely to return as full-time employees. 👉🏻 Intern retention rates are highest in accounting, financial services, and tech roles, with around 30% of interns returning to their employers in full-time positions. 🏅Highly prestigious companies retain more than 15 percentage points more of their interns than less prestigious companies. 📌 Companies with higher retention rates are rated highly in Compensation & Benefits and Career Opportunities by their interns relative to companies with lower retention rates. Happy Intern Day! In the course of the past two months, it has been fun and interesting to work with and get to know some of our interns. For many (maybe all?) this is their first fully in-person job experience. When I contrast our intern program this summer with my son's internship with Coke during the pandemic, it's like night and day. Both positive experiences, but very different. I know there is still a lot of discussion around #returntooffice and in our business that discussion usually focuses a lot on investment in office buildings. I wonder the long-term impact on young careers of in-person vs. work from anywhere vs. hybrid internships and early work experience.
Happy National Intern Day! We want to honor our interns that have been working with us this summer. We are grateful for all of their hard work and dedication throughout these past two months. I had the good fortune of having an intern on my team this summer. Not only that, but two other summer interns were using the test facilities that I manage quite a lot so I got to know all three. They all had a great time over the summer and their enthusiasm was infectious. A few things to note: If you’re an intern: · Ask a lot of questions. · Meet as many people as you can and learn something about them. · Keep busy - ask for more to do. It can be difficult to have that perfect project that starts exactly when you arrive and can be finished right before you leave. You might be working on many smaller things or helping on a couple of big things - roll with it. If you have an intern on your team: · Make sure your intern is bragging to the other interns about the cool stuff they are doing. · When the boring things come around, make sure they know they are not being punished. · Just like everyone else - they have to “eat their vegetables” - paperwork/slow processes, etc. · If you can simplify a process (safely and with integrity) to get them going quicker, do it · Ask yourself why the process shouldn’t be shorter - and then change it.
