Question: How can I prevent a robot restarting while an operator is within the robot cell? Answer, from Devin Murray, BSEE, MBA, FS Eng (TÜV Rheinland) 🔽 The harmonized ANSI RIA R15.06 #RoboticSafety standard specifically states that “where an operator, or part of an operator, can remain in the safeguarded space, additional measures shall be provided to prevent hazardous situations arising, such as unexpected startup.” These additional control measures can be the use of presence #SensingDevices such as safety light curtains, laser scanners and safety mats. All of which will monitor the safeguarded area and prevent a restart if an operator is present. Another possible option can be the use of a trapped key system, where the operator initiates a safe condition by removing a controlled key at a control station and using it to access the safeguarded area. While accessing the safeguarded area, the controlled key is trapped within the access door interlock, preventing the key from being removed to restart the #robot. The standard also provides guidance on situations where there is not a full line of site within the safeguarded area. In such a situation, a deliberate process of a double reset can be used which requires a reset within the hazard area. This is followed by a separate monitored reset outside the hazard area within a predetermined amount of time.
