'Situations' can arise at any time, during an event. Some big, some small. But, being ready to pivot quickly, is crucial. When Storm Doris hit (2017), the widespread disruption grounded flights and I needed to execute my 'continuity plan' to secure alternative options (flights, hotels, trains and road travel) to repatriate c.300 otherwise stranded delegates, from a conference at Schiphol Airport, back to the UK. In a flicker, my team's focus shifted from 'event delivery & delegate experience' to 'crisis management'. It was a challenging situation, worrying for delegates and stressful for the team. But, without back-up and contingency plan, it could have been much worse! You never know how good your event partnership is until it's truly tested. It’s times like Storm Doris that remind us why we do risk assessments and create contingency plans as 'par for the course', at MTL Events. #EventPlanning #CrisisManagement #StormDoris #EventProfs #pharmaevents #RiskManagement #ContingencyPlanning #EventsIndustry https://lnkd.in/edamdCZr

Last week, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps suggested to ITV News that there was no chance of Andy Street and Andy Burnham coming up with plan that would resurrect HS2. Then Mark Harper and Huw Merriman at the Conservative Home conference suggested they would in fact listen to what the Mayors had to say (with one Minister being a bit more positive than the other). Had policy changed in a week? Or is the Government just a bit all over the place with railway policy? At the same time, various press reports suggested the DfT might be adopting a rather Dad's Army "Don't panic Captain Mainwaring, don't panic!" approach to fixing problems. Dumping first class from HS2 to get headline seat capacity back up is one such example - a somewhat knee jerk and ill thought out response if it's true. But then working out what is going on these days is tricky to say the least. We wish Andy Street and Andy Burnham well in their endeavours and I for one pray that whatever they are proposing to Mark Harper takes HS2 Phase 2A at least (the bit from Birmingham to Crewe), relabels it as required to pass any political test, and gets it built. Anything else will simply kick the capacity crunch can down the road and help no-one. In this episode of Green Signals (Green Signals Productions Ltd) Nigel Harris and I look at the latest faffing around on HS2 but we also spend time looking at London North Eastern Railway's simpler fares pilot. A pilot which turns out to be great for the train operator but somewhat less great for the consumer. We hope the pilot gets rethought and quickly (aka 'dropped'). LNER are one of the best train operators for good reason and anyone can have an off day. But quality businesses realise it quickly, say so and change tack. Fingers crossed. #lner #railways #dft #hs2

This is ridiculous, Nicolas Steenhout's wheelchair is broken again this week due to airplane travel and rough handling of a wheelchair, and this time it is JetBlue baggage handlers again. (That is twice in a week's time frame!) For anyone not using a wheelchair, this is commonplace for wheelchair users when they travel by air, and it needs to stop because it is inconvenient, costly, and dangerous. Often times people arrive in their destination city and their wheelchairs are inoperable, also known as, unable to move about the airport, city, hotel, etc. until the wheelchair is fixed. As I previously posted this week, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), more than 11,000 wheelchairs and scooters were mishandled by air carriers in 2023. Under plans unveiled by the DOT in February, airlines that damage or delay the return of a wheelchair would be in violation of the Air Carrier Access Act and subject to a fine. Current status: Lodging ANOTHER damaged wheelchair claim with JetBlue. This time, they ripped the vinyl hand rim. Forgive the swearing but what the fuck? Twice in less than a week????! I’m going to be ripping my hand something fierce on this.

VP of Business Intelligence & Data Science | Professor of Practice | Analytical Alchemist: Transforming Data into Business Gold
I’m currently wedged into a middle seat in Delta Air Lines’ economy class. Directly in front of me? An empty row in Comfort Plus. But don’t even think about upgrading, even if you have more frequent flyer miles than a long-haul trucker. Sure, Delta, I get it. You want to encourage folks to pay more for those cushy seats. But here’s a wild thought: is denying a little comfort to loyal customers really the best strategy? Let’s be real. Right now, flights between NYC and MSY are limited. But Ed Bastian hear this: when more options arise, people won’t forget how they were treated. Customers remember the little things, especially when they involve discomfort and corporate indifference. 👉 Here’s a business lesson, Delta: Treat your loyal customers right, and they’ll stick with you even when they have other options. Keep this up, and they’ll be gone faster than you can say “upgrade.” For now, I’ll enjoy my cramped quarters and count the days until a better choice comes along. Fly smart, folks. 🛫 #CustomerExperience #AirlineLoyalty #FlyDelta
