In case you didn't already know, the AAFCO Proficiency Testing Program (PTP) is one of the best tools that your laboratory can use to ensure that you are producing sound, defensible sample results. AAFCO's PTP is accredited to ISO/IEC 17043:2010 by ANAB - ANSI National Accreditation Board is available in the U.S. and internationally, and is offered at a fraction of the cost compared to other proficiency testing programs. Additionally, material from past testing rounds is offered as Quality Reference Material (QRM) for a period of up to two years from testing or until supplies are exhausted. This material can be used as a control within your laboratory or for new chemists to demonstrate competency. QRM is available to anyone interested, but laboratories participating in the current year's PT scheme have access to it at a highly discounted price. How do you find that food safety hazard? You sample. But how should you sample? Is there science to help you define the sampling plan? YES! Simulating different hazard profiles and sampling plans can characterize the power of these plans by estimating the probability to accept the defined lot. Sampling reasonable total mass may detect high-prevalence, low-level contamination but not low-prevalence, low-level contamination, therefore sampling plays a different role in managing these types of contamination Overall, (i) systematic or stratified random sampling patterns are equal to or more powerful than random sampling for detecting any contamination type given the same sample size and mass, and (ii) taking more samples, even if smaller, can increase the power to detect contamination. While this paper uses powdered infant formula – the findings are applicable to other powder foodstuffs. Is the IAFNS Food Microbiology Committee supporting other impactful research - YES.
