Pyrogasification is a challenging yet promising technology for recovering from biomass and waste. Gasification is already a mature technology, where (traditionally) coal is burned with an oxygen-poor stream, resulting in the generation of a fuel gas. This gas is then burned to generate electricity, and the heat is recovered to produce steam and/or hot water, often in Combined Heat and Power (CHP) applications. Due to the increasing need to reduce GHG emissions, significant effort is being directed towards converting biomass or waste into energy or synthetic fuels (RFNBO). Through the pyrogasification of such waste, syngas is generated, which can either be burned to produce energy or converted into methane or other fuels via methanation or Fischer-Tropsch process. However, there are challenges. Feedstock variability, especially in terms of water content, complicates the process. Additionally, the amount of tar produced can make syngas treatment difficult and lead to equipment fouling. To gain experience and knowledge in the field, two key projects were built: GoBiGas, by Göteborg Energy, and Gaia, by Engie. Now, Engie is scaling up its plant with a new project called Salamandre, located in Le Havre, France. This is an exciting market for process engineers to keep an eye on. Here, I’m sharing a report from the GoBiGas team, filled with valuable lessons learned. https://lnkd.in/dryNz2Tq

🌱 What is Biomass Energy? 🌱 Biomass energy is a renewable energy source derived from organic materials like wood, crop residues, and animal waste. At Redemption Solar and Roofing, we’re passionate about promoting diverse renewable energy solutions, and biomass is an excellent complement to solar and wind energy. How Biomass Energy Works: • Organic materials are collected and converted into energy through combustion, gasification, or anaerobic digestion. • The energy can be used for heating, electricity generation, or producing biofuels like ethanol. • Biomass releases carbon dioxide, but it is considered carbon-neutral because the plants used absorb CO₂ during their growth. Benefits of Biomass Energy: • Renewable: Biomass comes from continually replenished resources. • Waste Reduction: Converts agricultural and industrial waste into energy. • Versatility: Used for electricity, heating, and liquid fuels. • Job Creation: Promotes local jobs in agriculture and waste management. Contact Redemption Solar for insights into integrating biomass with other renewable systems for a comprehensive energy solution. #BiomassEnergy #RenewableSolutions #SustainableEnergy #RedemptionSolarAndRoofing Know more about Redemption Solar and Roofing & services here: https://lnkd.in/gx9MD4id
