Fresh off a mixed fourth quarter but a huge 2023, Mattel, Inc. chairman and CEO Ynon Kreiz is keeping an open mind about an activist investor who is challenging his stewardship of the iconic toymaker. "We always welcome feedback from our shareholders and are happy to have a conversation with our investors," Kreiz, Mattel's CEO for about six years, told me on Yahoo Finance. "We are focused on executing our strategy, and our goals are very much aligned with all our shareholders to create long-term value." After a famously tepid reaction from the sharks, Amazon later bought the company for a deal worth nearly $1 billion. By early 2018, the company introduced a smart home doorbell dubbed Ring. While creator Jamie Siminoff may have left season five of "Shark Tank" empty-handed, despite investing $10,000 in his presentation, his invention currently brings in roughly $577 million a year. Also me, after watching PepsiCo's Pepsiman commercials: investing in PepsiCo as if it was the magnificent 7 altogether. It's worth noting that in the realm of innovation management, it's taught that being in the shadow of a leading brand can foster innovation and diversify product development. In competitions like PepsiCo vs. The Coca-Cola Company, adidas vs. Nike, or Samsung Electronics vs. Apple, the 'little brother'—sometimes with larger revenues—must innovate constantly to survive.
