Rail transport requires steel in the trains and for the rails and infrastructure. For short or medium haul journeys, rail reduces travel times and CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre compared to nearly all other forms of transport. Steel makes up 15% of the mass of high-speed trains and is essential. The main steel components of these trains are bogies (the structure underneath the trains including wheels, axels, bearings, and motors). Freight or goods wagons are made almost entirely of steel. #steelFacts https://ow.ly/2PJt50QoEVs #transport #railways #infrastructure #engineering

How thick does your railway tie really need to be? 🤔 Many railroaders have their standard tie sizes they feel comfortable using. But these dimensions are based on using treated timber ties. Other materials can be a lot stronger, so the necessary dimension size can change. Here is one example! Deutsche Bahn (German Railway) had the first large project at Haus Knipp Railway Bridge with FFU Synthetic ties, an alternative tie material. The trains run at 75mph with 22.5 tons axle load with a passing tonnage of about 30,000 tons a day. The existing timber ties at this open deck bridge usually had a height of 9.8”. With FFU, the height was only 6.3”. In order to achieve the necessary height for the rail level despite smaller ties, we placed additional blocks to the bottom of the tie connected to the bridge girder. The big bonus? Less material means less costs! SEKISUI obtained the general approval for bridges, turnouts and tracks from EBA, the German Federal Railway Authority, in 2017. FFU is the only synthetic/composite railway sleeper that has been approved up to 25 tons axle load or 230km/h in Germany. You may not need ties as large as you think with strong material. If you’d like to find out the right tie size with FFU for your project, please reach out! #railwayinnovation #bridgedesign #railwaytie #railway #sustainability #resiliency #strength #railwayindustry #compositetie #recycling #reuse #innotrans2024
