How do children learn to read? Research tells us the Five Components of Early Literacy + Reading serve as the building blocks for early literacy + a lifetime of learning. 1️⃣ 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: The knowledge that words are made up of sounds. 2️⃣ 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀: The relationship between sounds and printed letters. 3️⃣ 𝗙𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: The ability to read accurately, easily and quickly. 4️⃣ 𝗩𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆: The number of new words children are exposed to. 5️⃣ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: When a child reads fluently and understands that words become ideas. Earlier this month, Kara Taylor, PhD invited me to her literacy methods course to speak to pre-service teachers enrolled in the Indiana University School of Education - Indianapolis on the impact of having diverse children's literature in their classroom spaces. After my presentation, students -Understood foundational knowledge on the background and importance of having diverse literature for youth -Learned how to conduct a book audit to identify culturally relevant texts -Gained practical starting points in the forms of books, culturally relevant booklists/stores, and classroom evaluation forms to use in their profession Some culturally relevant texts I highlighted to the class included: -The Kindest Red: A Story About Hijab and Friendship by Ibtihaj Muhammad & S.K. Ali -Pathwork Prince by Baptiste Paul -Yasmin The Zookeeper by Saadia Faruqi -A Friend for Henry by Jenn Bailey As a children's author and advocate for literacy, I am passionate about ensuring that every child can find their story within the pages of a book. As we move forward with the Science of Reading to increase our children's reading skills, let us not forget also to provide them with books to read that affirm who they are and shape them into who they will become. Every child needs a champion, which is what I have stepped up to do through advocating for diverse children's literature. #DiverseLiterature #CulturallyRelevantTexts #Reading #Literacy
