TODAY, five wonderful alumni from the Class of 2023—Zenan, Bohan, Tania, Yvette, and Fearghas—will be visiting Balwyn High School to talk to Year 11 and Year 12 students re their best advice for thriving in VCE. Alumni engagement plays a pivotal role in supporting Year 11 and Year 12 students as they navigate the challenges of VCE. Traction is a central component of Gino Wickman 's book by the same name. Traction means that all stakeholders within an organization must be disciplined and accountable for fulfilling the objectives. Vision without traction is hallucination. In a school setting, this means giving teachers, administrators, and support staff the tools to evaluate their own work and continuously improve. It also enables the institution to hold each individual accountable for their performance. By implementing regular check-ins, progress reviews, and data-driven assessments, schools can identify areas for improvement, celebrate successes, and ensure that everyone is working towards the same objectives with discipline and accountability.

The 6’3” center on my college basketball team drove a lovingly-used black Volkswagen Beetle. Watching her unfurl from its tight confines was entertaining, but it paled in comparison to the ride.  Most of our teammates and I had cars in varying size, form and functionality, but hers was the one we took when we were more about the going than the place we had to go. The Bug was perfect for short jaunts from the gym to the dorm when the undeterred north wind was howling and we, soaked with sweat, needed to get from point A to point B (preferably without catching pneumonia). It was our vehicle of choice for a 7-Eleven Slurpee or a stack of pancakes at IHOP. It was always what we took when we had nowhere to be but felt the urge to go. As the point guard --aka, the only one who could fit-- my spot was in the backseat behind the driver, knees tucked under chin. This is such an important step forward in creating high school classrooms that are more student-centered, engaging, and collaborative. Classrooms where students connect their experiences to their learning and their learning to their passions. Classrooms that not only equip students with content knowledge but also with the social-emotional skills to use that content knowledge with energy, confidence, and purpose. If you speak with and listen to high school students, they will tell you how anxious and overwhelmed they are by the pressures of navigating high school and planning out the next chapter of their lives. More than ever, we need SEL content, like this, at the high school level to engage students by discussing issues that are relevant to them—issues like how to connect their knowledge and passions to real-world outcomes. Effective SEL at the high school level will lead to increased learning and students empowered to continue on their educational journeys towards a future that they no longer fear—instead they can be excited about a future they are confident they can create.
