As Nigerians, our rich cultural heritage is our greatest strength. Sadly, the rate at which we're losing our indigenous knowledge is alarming and poses a huge threat to our identity and future. This is why our social project, aimed at promoting the respect, admiration, and veneration of indigenous knowledge is crucial. Indigenous knowledge encompasses our traditions, customs, language, art, and history. It shapes our values, worldview, and sense of belonging. Preserving our indigenous knowledge will help to foster cultural identity, diversity and inclusivity. However, if we fail to intentionally teach and preserve our indigenous knowledge, future generations will struggle to understand their heritage which will lead to a disconnection from their ancestral values, a cultural erosion and eventually an extinction. Therefore, we urge parents, guardians, teachers, and educators to take promoting indigenous knowledge seriously. Indigenous knowledge should be incorporated into school curricula. Students should be engaged in cultural activities and workshops, and language preservation should be encouraged. The United Nations estimates that there are approximately 370 million indigenous individuals spread across more than 70 countries globally. These communities face significant marginalization in economic, social, and cultural aspects. Despite the numerous challenges, indigenous populations worldwide have achieved noteworthy milestones in reclaiming their rights over the past decade, as recognized by the UN's International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (1995-2004). During this period, significant changes occurred in Africa, including the emergence of an organized civil society that represented diverse indigenous groups across the continent. These civil-society organizations advocated with the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights, prompting the recognition of the concept of indigenous peoples in Africa. Under the influence of organizations representing indigenous communities, some countries have made substantial progress. For instance, Burundi recently amended its constitution to ensure representation in the national assembly for the indigenous Twa people. In Rwanda, efforts are underway to address war crimes against the Twa during the 1994 genocide, where a significant portion of the Twa population was tragically killed. In other parts of Africa, Cameroon officially recognizes "pygmies" and nomadic pastoralists as indigenous people. The government has committed to implementing policies that compensate and resettle indigenous groups affected by the Chad-Cameroon oil pipeline project, which is supported by private investors and the World Bank. Additionally, Morocco has lifted a ban on teaching the Amazigh (Berber) language in schools and established a national commission to formulate policies regarding indigenous language and culture. By doing so, we contribute to providing alternative paths for sustainable development and prosperity. We continue to celebrate the vital work and #CollectiveImpact happening at the ICT4D Conference in Accra, Ghana this week! Our Deputy Director of Field and Impact Programs, Stephanie Siy moderated an incredible panel on the plenary stage today, “Programming Digital Solutions for Localized Development.”   And a massive shout out to Elizabeth Njoroge of NetHope Member, Christian Aid and Nora Lindström Lindstrom, ICT4D Lead and Catholic Relief Services for announcing our newest, Digital Development Guidebook! The new guidebook was developed by NetHope’s ICT4D Working Group in partnership with Catholic Relief Services, Oxfam, Helvetas USA, Mercy Corps, Christian Aid, SOS Children's Villages International, International Rescue Committee, and exchange.design.   The goal of this guidebook is to help organizational leaders reflect on how to digitally transform their programming and support pro-poor, and inclusive digital development in partner countries, in effective and responsible ways.
