We cannot assume that our gentle readers are familiar with the works of Jane Austen, but in her famous work "Emma", the titular heroine is described taking a basket of food to the unfortunates of the parish. Such charitable work was important in rural Regency England, and appropriate for young women of the gentler classes. We don't have Emma Woodhouse. We have Community Care Peterborough and they need help. Organizations that help our elderly or disabled citizens are a lot more important than they commonly get credit for being. In the days before our society became more secular and families stopped living in a multigenerational setting, it was common for the community to look out for those who had less, to keep them going through tough times. We've seen it in our own past, when the notorious Cavan Blazers teamed up to bring in the crop of an injured Catholic farmer. For the most part, family looked after family and neighbours looked after neighbours. Society has changed. It's more likely that someone reaching old age will have no family or family who are not living close. Parents who have raised disabled children find themselves worried for that child's future when their own ends eventually come and there's nobody there to look after a now disabled adult. This is not to say that siblings (if there are siblings) or other family who don't live close don't care what happens to the individual, but personal circumstances or distance can make care for these vulnerable folks a logistical problem. Groups like Community Care help with these gaps, allowing seniors and people with certain disabilities stay independent. By taking care of household chores, bringing nutritious meals, driving the person to appointments or errands, a lot of duties that would otherwise be fulfilled by family are completed with cheer and compassion. It's more likely that, with constant interaction and socialization, any warning signs of health or safety matters will be met before anything unfortunate can happen. Stop by the Community Care page and see what you can do today to help. https://buff.ly/4cRAm9B #CommunityBuilding #CareAndCompassion #HelpingTheVulnerable #SeniorLiving #ThoughtfulThursday Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough Peterborough and the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce Peterborough County

Independence Blue Cross Foundation Executive Director Heather Major shared this Inside Philanthropy article on #mackenziescott and her thoughtful philanthropic approach via #yieldgiving and it honestly couldn’t be more timely. those interviewed note the value of #unrestrictedgrants especially at a time when #communityhealthcenters are up against issues like complex #workforce forces (both in recruitment and retainment), rising costs due to lingering #inflation, and less-than-ideal #medicaidreimbursement rates despite rising demand from patients in urgent need of care in an already strained system. one takeaway away that i wasnt expecting in this article was captured in the below quote, and i am proud to say IBX Foundation does this so well in concert with our Independence Blue Cross friends, such as bringing The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Secretary Valerie Arkoosh, MD, MPH to last summer’s health center partner meeting to discuss #medicaidredetermination: "Funders can empower health centers and help give them a voice at the table with larger players in the system, like managed care plans and the larger health systems….Funding is important, but so is opening doors and advocating for the community health centers and giving them a platform."
In 2023, MacKenzie Scott once again stood out in the philanthrosphere with hundreds of large, unrestricted gifts. This time, health equity was a theme with major support for small centers that serve many low-income patients. Have you heard about…Lilies of the Valley? They re-purpose is flowers from weddings, parties, and events, extending the impact beyond that single moment. A team of dedicated volunteers carefully arranged repurpose flowers into beautiful bouquets for those most in need. What patient wouldn’t want to receive a beautiful bouquet What a wonderful initiative! The concept of Lilies of the Valley is truly heartwarming and selfless. By repurposing flowers from weddings, parties, and events, the team of volunteers is able to bring joy and comfort to patients in hospitals and nursing homes. The gesture is not only a thoughtful way to reuse flowers but also a way to extend the emotional impact of those special occasions beyond the initial event. The idea of presenting beautiful bouquets to patients in hospitals and nursing homes is particularly touching. It's easy to imagine the smiles on their faces when they receive such a lovely gift, especially during times when they may be feeling under the weather or in need of some cheer. The bouquet becomes a symbol of kindness, compassion, and care, reminding them that they are not alone and that someone is thinking of them. Moreover, the act of giving flowers has been shown to have a positive impact on mental and emotional well-being. Studies have found that receiving flowers can boost mood, reduce stress, and even alleviate symptoms of depression. In a hospital or nursing home setting, where patients may be experiencing physical discomfort or emotional distress, the gift of flowers can be especially meaningful. It's clear that the Lilies of the Valley initiative is more than just a creative way to reuse flowers; it's a demonstration of community spirit, compassion, and humanity. The team of volunteers behind this project are truly making a difference in the lives of others, one bouquet at a time. Earlier this year, a group of #Coventry citizens gathered for our #ConnectingForGoodCov Collaboration Station and, through their shared experiences, created the 'Need The Loo' campaign 🚽 They were motivated to act on hearing the experiences of different people needing easy access to public toilets without fuss. Most struggling with our city centre's current provision 🚫 So they invited more people to contribute their experiences by survey and this week, following World Toilet Day (19 November), they released some of their findings... 💬 "It takes careful planning to go out. I need to know beforehand what is open and what is accessible." 💬 "Having to purchase a coffee to use the loo is not right. It's another disability tax." 💬 "When going into the city centre, I have to limit what I drink so I won't need to go to the toilet as much." People shared their opinions of the worst and best public toilets. They shared their strategies to cope too - reducing time spent in the city centre and only being able to go to certain places, for example. So what would the 'Need The Loo' team like next? They would love to share their recommendations with city decision-makers. They would also love to hear from anyone with lived experience of these issues. If you can help, contact community organiser Melissa Smith or by email to mvsmith@grapevinecovandwarks.org. #ShiftingPower #SparkingCommunity #CommunityOrganising #NeedTheLoo #Accessibility Connecting for Good is a movement against isolation and marginalisation, sparked by Grapevine and local people, towards a more inclusive, better connected Coventry. ⚠️Webinar: Asset-based and Inclusive: how can community-orientated approaches embrace diversity⚠️ The importance to wellbeing of being connected to family, friends and communities is now embedded within integrated care thinking and policies. Approaches such as asset-based community development, social prescribing, shared lives schemes, and community navigation are helping to transform health and care systems from being deficit focused to building on the aspirations and strengths of individuals and communities. There is, however, a risk that such approaches replicate inequalities in society through not being accessible to disadvantaged groups and working with the communities which already have the most assets. This webinar will consider how asset-based approached to integrated care can be aware of potential inequalities and pro-actively embed ways of working to address these in their practice and will include contribution from representatives from leading asset-based organisations and opportunity for discussion and debate. Speakers include Professor Robin Miller of IMPACT and the International Journal of Integrated Care (IJIC) and the University of Birmingham, Sarah McLaughlin of IMPACT and Older Person’s charity Mid & East Antrim Agewell Partnership, Adam Lent Chief Executive at New Local and Ewan King of IMPACT and Shared Lives Plus. 📆Tuesday, 5th December 2023 ⏰14:30 - 16:00 (IST/ BST) 🔗https://lnkd.in/guK4h6Jy

In the company of Sage Advocacy CEO & Regional Coordinator it was great to see the power of community under the extraordinary leadership of Dr Jerry Cowley at St Brendan's Village in Mulranny County #Mayo. In its current and future format with plans for Age Friendly Units and support from local authority, community and #HSE the Village provides a template for community care of the elderly. Replicating the model and further reinforcing required supports, leveraging funding, working with the private sector, harnessing innovation, technology, the HEIs and other actors while facilitating a more integrated model, the future can be bright. Enabling a community centric continuum of care, with Day Centres, which is primarily home based but with sheltered, age friendly and higher end facilities as options and improved coordination for step down as necessary are just some of the ingredients for a national program of success. Three partners are key to a successful, integrated continuum for care of the elderly, #Goverment, #CivilSociety and #Market. Right now there is an imbalance of care of the elderly in the hands of the private sector. There is so much more that can be achieved if Civil Society through community based models like St Brendan’s Village are resourced and replicated using social enterprise initiatives so that we can all live longer while growing old near those we know and love. #elderlycare #eldercare #CommissiononCare #communitydevelopment #communitycare #humanrights #respectforpeople #GAAforcare
