As we approach spring, we often hear more and more about internships for the summer. Use this post to comment where you know internships are going to be located and if you have any tips on how to get in the door. I often get asked about internships but we at Kforce rarely interact with internship managers.

🎉 I am celebrating the Taco Bell Foundation & the leadership of Jennifer Walker Bradbury, Marchela Lavey & Andrew German for partnering with CoLabL to launch PAID micro-internships for #LiveMasScholarship recipients. These 4-6 week experiences include career mentorship, skill development, and group + independent work aligned with scholars' academic and career interests. 👉🏾 WHY THIS MATTERS - Gallup studies show that 40% of college students have had an internship while in undergrad. The 60% that have not (disproportionally first-gen students) cite difficulty in obtaining one, aligning internships and interests, and the inability to afford it as some of the top barriers. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, paid interns are about twice as likely to land a job after graduation compared to non-interns. Interns: The best 5 minutes you can spend before leaving! It's feedback season! With internships coming to a close, make sure you leave with a clear idea of how you performed. Talk to your supervisors, team leaders, and peers. Also, take some time to reflect on your experience. 📌 Did you enjoy it? 📌 What did you learn? 📌 Did you feel valued? 📌 Was the environment good for growth? These are the important questions to consider as you wrap up the summer. Today I thrust some straight-out-of-school-I-don’t-know-what-I-want-to-do interns with pushy helicopter moms onto one of my friends who is still recovering from her last batch of summer interns. Summer internships are great ways for young students to get used to a work culture. They are also used to pad resumes for college, masters and even high school students with no marketable skills as such are looking for summer internships. Now unless you go to a top university or are working on some serious practical skills, it isn’t always easy to get an internship in the long summer break between academic terms. And often we find that parents/ relatives / distant acquaintances are leveraged to spring an internship for the youngster. Often, the employer doesn’t know how to manage the summer intern. They’re young, with not too many practical skills, are temporary as they’re around only for the summer and are pretty raw. When I look back at my time as a student, the most growth came from internships. Theory only takes you so far. Internships were a way for me to apply what I was learning. Theory Concepts Frameworks Principles They helped build my foundational understanding of marketing and business. But internships allowed me to learn in a real and tangible way. When I was in college, I did three internships. 1) SALES for a small distribution company. Basically I had to convince grocery stores to buy more kool-aid and country time lemonade in my territory. 🤑 2) Product MARKETING for Hunter Douglas, Inc. They are a medium-sized manufacturer of window treatments. I helped do market and customer research ahead of launching a new product. 🤓 3) TRAINING under the HR department of Alcatel-Lucent I helped organize training materials for their 10K+ employees and even delivered two training classes to seasoned professionals about communication skills. 😄 Each internship taught me something different about myself, how business works, and gave me an opportunity to build real business skills. In the end, I chose a career in Marketing. But I'm doing all of these roles now at SHAKE Marketing! Sales, Marketing and Training. Funny how life comes full circle! P.S. Our Summer Youth Leadership Training Program participants crushed it during their #orientation bootcamp! CareerSource Polk presented them with valuable tools and skills they need to succeed at their summer internships over the next 9 weeks, as well as entering the workforce. During the week-long bootcamp, participants: - Engaged their social and communication skills with our Business Services department - Received resume and interview preparedness advice from our Human Resources Director - Gained valuable information about building credit and preventing credit fraud thanks to Fifth Third Bank - Understood the importance of wellness checks and got an inside view healthcare industry from Indigent Health Care - Learned skills on how to handle stress and burnout with Antoinette Pollard, piece_ofzen They conquered challenges, and emerged stronger, skilled, and ready to thrive. Internships, when well executed can be tools that elevate your impact with respect to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This isn't just about paying your interns well, either. That's the bare minimum. Not everyone has access to a car to arrive on time or a budget for nice clothing to match the corporate aesthetic. However, one of the best ways to influence upward mobility is relationships. As interns - they have less to lose and more to gain by building relationships with each other and staying connected. In addition to making sure your program is less about cleaning out the file cabinets and more about building basic skills that make them viable for entry level roles... teach your interns how to network in a fashion that cultivates depth of relationship - not just quantities. I made that mistake as a rookie intern. By the 4th internship I realized collecting the name or business card of every lost soul I encountered in the elevator wasn't going to cut it.
