𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐥𝐥: 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲, 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 ⁣ 🇬🇧I waited till the age of 26years when I had a privilege of going to a foreign country for my education and sought my first therapy session which was freely available at Queen's University Belfast and it was life changing, several years of un-diagnosed depression which followed me across seven seas and several oceans finally found a place. 🏠 ⁣ 🇮🇳 By 29, I could finally afford paid therapy in India.Since then, I have benefited immensely from regular sessions. Over the past six years, I have been running my own practice. I've also provided a sliding scale for many clients, but I recognize the need to make my practice more accessible and flexible.⁣ ⁣ That's why I am excited to announce an initiative aimed at ensuring everyone has access to therapy, regardless of their financial situation. Our session prices range from INR 800/- to 1600/- per session, allowing clients to pay what they can within this range. Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR): Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) is a crucial approach that we need to embrace in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) to ensure that Speech-Language Therapy (SLT) services reach the most vulnerable and those in need of it the most. By taking our services directly to the communities where they are needed, we can break down barriers to access and provide much-needed support to those who may otherwise go without. CBR not only ensures that individuals receive the care they need, but it also empowers communities to take ownership of their own health and well-being. By working closely with community leaders and organizations, we can build sustainable and inclusive programs that promote independence and quality of life for all. As speech-language therapists, it is our responsibility to advocate for the implementation of CBR in LMICs and to ensure that all individuals have equal access to the services they need. By working together and leveraging the power of community-based approaches, we can make a real and lasting impact on the lives of those who need us most. Individualism v. Collectivism: Bridging Worldviews with BIPOC Clients & Families The worldviews of individualism and collectivism are often at the root of various cultural differences that emerge in therapy, particularly when discussing family-related issues. The Individualistic v. Collectivistic Values Continuum Profile developed by Dr. Manuel X. Zamarripa is both a clinical intervention tool with clients and a reflective/training/consultation tool for therapists. The tool explicitly makes use of self-rating on a continuum to help make connections and brides between starkly different worldviews and can be extremely helpfully for situations when the therapeutic process becomes “stuck” due to differing client and therapist values. The Values Continuum will allow us to bring forth cultural and familial strengths that can facilitate healthy connectedness to both family and community from a culturally rooted framework.
