Our collaboration with Agile BioFoundry and Industrial Microbes (iMicrobes) successfully scaled up the company's bio-based process for producing P3HP, a precursor to acrylic acid. Working with ABPDU’s Eric Sundstrom, the team performed several experiments to collect data and screen process conditions. The collaboration achieved a 300-liter scale production of P3HP. “This partnership is accelerating the validation of both the scientific and the production conditions for our solutions, opening up the door to commercial partnerships for low-carbon footprint products. At a time when bio-based products are seeing growing traction, the support from the ABF and ABPDU helped us get ahead of the curve," said Industrial Microbes CEO Noah Helman. ABPDU researchers, in collaboration with researchers at the Joint BioEnergy Institute and Kansas State University, developed a greener approach for extracting volatile fatty acids from wastewater generated from large-scale animal farms. Volatile fatty acids are used as raw materials in several industries, and as precursors to biofuels and bioplastics. "We present an efficient process for volatile fatty acids extraction and esterification in a single ionic liquid system, facilitating wastewater valorization through anaerobic fermentation," said corresponding author Ning Sun. #bioeconomy #wastewater #fermentation #IonicLiquids #biofuels #bioplastics Ramkrishna Singh, PhD

This summer, ABPDU hosted Kaela Henry, a student intern in the Arizona State University-Berkeley Lab STEM Pathways program. Kaela worked on biological carbon dioxide conversion to aviation fuel under the guidance of mentors Eric Sundstrom and Young Eun Song. "This internship provided me with valuable skill sets and knowledge that I will utilize within the entirety of my career. Concluding this internship, I produced my very first scientific poster and report paper. This was such a worthwhile experience as I genuinely had the best time learning from the vast amount of professionals and scientists," said Kaela.
