Corporate Culture At Its Best !!

This week we had an exciting Diversity Management Training session at Salzburg AG where we explored the multifaceted dimensions of diversity. Diversity at the workplace is not just about the explicit aspects but also the implicit differences that shape how we think, behave, and decide. Managing diversity effectively will lead to higher performance and innovation. Or briefly summarized: Diversity is a fact, Inclusion is an act! At a recent AmFam Group Procurement Leadership meeting, a colleague shared an anecdote about an approach a company used during their interview process. The company would strategically place a piece of trash in the path of candidates as they walked to their interview, testing whether the candidate would take a moment to pick up the trash or simply step over it. The thought being that how an individual reacts can reveal a lot about a person’s values and potential contributions to a team… we all loved that concept and ran with it, calling out instances we've witnessed of others picking up the figurative trash. And so, the AmFam Group Procurement Oscar Awards were born... Every day, we each encounter moments where we can either walk past a problem or step up to solve it. These moments might seem small, like noticing a piece of trash on the ground and deciding whether or not to pick it up - but they represent much more than just physical litter. They symbolize the 'trash'—the challenges and inefficiencies—that we come across in our professional lives. In AmFam Group Procurement, we believe in not just walking by. We believe in picking up the trash. This means taking initiative, going beyond our defined roles, and addressing issues that we see, no matter how big or small they may seem. It’s about seeing a need and filling it, recognizing a problem and solving it, even if it’s not in our job description. To celebrate and encourage this mindset, we are introducing the 'Oscar Award,' named after Oscar the Grouch, who famously lives in a trash can. This award recognizes those among us who embody the spirit of taking action. It’s for those who don’t wait to be asked to help, who don’t leave problems for others to solve, and who actively contribute to making our environment—both physical and organizational—better for everyone. Let’s strive to be Oscar-worthy every day, knowing that these actions build up to significant positive changes in our workplace. 💡What are your inclusivity strategies in the workplace? JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) practices go beyond mere compliance or tick-box exercises; it's about creating a culture that values and respects the unique perspectives and backgrounds of all employees. Inclusivity must precede diversity as a primary focus because it's not enough to attract diverse talent; that talent must be nurtured and provided with a safe, empowering environment in which they can thrive. There is no perfectly finished JEDI strategy; it’s an ongoing dialogue and consistent process of iteration. Embracing a non-hierarchical culture At Dari Mooch, one of our core principles was to build a company without a hierarchical and 'seth' system dictating the value of work. No one should ever feel that any task is beneath them. As founders, we committed to doing any work that needed to be done, no matter how basic it seemed. This approach was put to the test when one of our associates was tasked with checking pre-production samples in cartons at procurement facilities. He claimed the work was beneath him, stating that he was overqualified. We had to let him go because we were committed to fostering a culture where no job is considered too menial for anyone. Our belief is simple: every role is important, and every team member, from the office boy to senior executives, is valued equally. For instance, we celebrate the birthdays of our office boy with the same enthusiasm and respect as we do for senior-level employees. As leaders, it is your responsibility to demonstrate that no task is too small by participating in everyday tasks.
