Multiplexing Assay Readouts by Automated Fluorescence Microscopy Did you know that automated fluorescence microscopy can be used to multiplex several different assay readouts in a single experiment? That's why such assays are often called "high-content" assays, rather than "high-throughput" assays. But there is not really a tradeoff between high-content and high-throughput. A good drug-discovery assay can provide both. Consider the example shown in this post, in which viable cells and dead cells are stained in different fluorescent channels, and the size and shape of tumor spheroids are measured, all in response to different drug concentrations in 384-well format.
