Are you an International NGO (#INGO) wondering how to adapt your strategy to become more helpful for local communities? You may be in need of a capacity building program within your strategy! Thanks to Jennifer Lentfer for this article on “Overlooking the Capacity of Local NGOs.” Although Jennifer Lentfer’s article focuses on how the development space needs to place local NGOs at the centre of its efforts, it also reveals the great need for INGOs to reskill and retrain so that they can strengthen their alignment with existing efforts by indigenous communities. Here are the 5 key highlights: 1. Local indigenous organisations are well placed to provide the ever-elusive “scale-up.” 2. Local indigenous organisations have capacities that larger aid agencies just don’t have. 3. Local indigenous organisations have vital expertise about how poor people cope day-to-day. 4. Local indigenous organisations are better positioned to make communities more resilient and adaptive. 5. Local indigenous organisations fill existing gaps in the government and international aid sectors. A key quote that we ABSOLUTELY loved: “I believe that larger-scale support of local initiatives and grassroots leadership is the revolution needed in the social good sector.” Thousand Currents Currents | Georgetown University | University of Vermont | Oxfam America | How-Matters.org Read more:

NGOs: Vital Partners in #Government, Empowering #Communities Worldwide Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) serve important roles alongside governments, especially where governments may have limitations in resources or focus. They provide specialized services and expertise that complement what governments can do. One key strength of NGOs is their independence from government influence. This allows them to stay neutral and objective when tackling specific issues, which helps build trust with the public. NGOs also excel in connecting with local communities. This closeness helps them understand and address community needs that might not be fully met by government programs. By engaging directly with people, NGOs can tailor their #services to fit #local requirements. Advocacy is another strong suit of NGOs. They can push for policies and laws that benefit specific groups or communities, ensuring marginalized voices are heard. This advocacy role extends to lobbying governments to take action on critical issues. With specialized knowledge in areas like #healthcare, #education, or #environmental conservation, NGOs offer expertise that governments may lack. This expertise allows NGOs to deliver high-quality services and support where it's most needed. NGOs are also known for their flexibility. They can swiftly respond to new challenges and adjust #strategies as needed, which is crucial in tackling complex #social and #economic problems. #Transparency and #accountability are fundamental principles for NGOs. They operate openly, ensuring that funds are used efficiently and services are delivered effectively, without the #bureaucracy that can sometimes slow down government efforts. On a global scale, NGOs collaborate across borders with #international organizations and other NGOs. This collaboration enables them to tackle global issues collectively and share successful approaches from different parts of the world. In essence, NGOs play a crucial role by filling gaps in government services, providing specialized knowledge, advocating for public interests, engaging with local communities, and collaborating globally. Their independence, expertise, and adaptability make them essential partners in addressing the diverse challenges we face today. #Strategy #government #ngo

🎯GOOD EXAMPLES OF SHIFTING POWER FROM NGOS 🏹 Last week, we had ActionAid, a member of the The Sherwood Way Learning Network, share with us their evolving governance, which is likely one of the most successful examples of power distribution in an international NGO. 💭 "This was a political shift aimed at changing where power and control resided within the organization" Javier García de la Oliva It began in the 1990s as part of their regionalization process and was accelerated in 2012, granting almost full autonomy to their national work and emphasizing changes at that level. Action Aid currently operates as a network with 25 affiliates, 5 associates, and 15 country programs. Despite challenges such as fundraising primarily from the North, they stand out as one of the most successful examples of internal power distribution in an international NGO. Key drivers behind their success include: ➡ Having a CEO from the Global South and leaders in country offices predominantly from the Global South. ➡Leveraging the advantage (and sometimes the disadvantage) of being a critical NGO with a mindset that is more ambitious than their operational scale. ➡Encouraging leaders not only from the Global South but also from social movements and communities to engage in their spaces and challenge them. ➡Fostering an internal culture that continuously seeks to shift power dynamics and break away from traditional North-South relations. 👩🏫 Join us in learning from organizations and NGOs with a strong commitment to decolonization: Claudia.caselli@thesherwoodway.com

Partnership is necessary for NGOs and social enterprises to address complex challenges, amplify their reach, and ultimately create a more significant positive impact in Africa and beyond. Nonprofit organizations and social enterprises need to focus on how best to work together so that they can create real, significant social impact in the world. Here are three things to note before committing to a partnership/collaboration: 1. Be clear on the why. Understand your organization's fundamental reasons for working with others.Ensure there are shared values and beliefs between both organizations. 2. Understand your organization's core competencies and what it can bring to the table. 3. Know your limits. Ensure smooth communication as well as maintain the boundaries needed for a healthy relationship. Successful partnerships also know when and how to exit a relationship. The result of any collaborative partnership is that both organizations are stronger and thriving communities are built which will make a significant impact in Africa and the world at large. #Socialinnovation #Changemakers #Partnership #IdeationHubAfrica #GlobalDevelopment
