When you read the summary narrative of this hero's story, it’s easy to miss the intensity of the event that took place. Blind entry, immediate chaos, hand-to-hand engagement , and split second decision making to save the hostage and take out the enemy… It’s amazing to think what was pulled off in a moment of such swirling intensity. While we will never be in a scenario like his, perhaps we can take clues from this amazing story for how to deal with uncertainty, chaos, setbacks, fear, and the fog and friction of our own leadership journey.

On #multidomain operations in Bucharest Delighted to take part in the GLOBSEC side-event at the Black Sea and Balkan Forum and speak alongside Ben Hodges and Phil Breedlove on multidomain operations and the readiness of NATO Eastern flank nations. GLOBSEC will be soon publishing a report written by Alexander Lanoszka and edited my myself, which is dedicated to the multidomain readiness. As the war in #Ukraine clearly demonstrates effective defence requires close cooperation between all services: land and air force as well as navy in addition to the cyber and hybrid dimensions. Co-operation across the services is however often counter-intuitive for the armed forces that are used to the silos cultures. The report by GLOBSEC is offering several recommendations serving to prepare East flank nations to operations across several domains.

Did you have a tough day today? Work is tough. Sometimes no one recognizes your work. Sometimes, you don’t get credit for what you have accomplished. Sometimes, people claim credit for your work. When that happens, think of LT Thornton. He ran INTO fire. The most likely thing that could have happened, him dying, didn’t. He eliminated the threat. He carried his colleague to safety and swam with him for two hours. No one is shooting at you. Things that happen at work, can hurt you but they can’t kill you. Would you put your life in guaranteed lethal danger to save a colleague? Let’s thank God you probably never have and never will. Get some perspective. Life and work are hard. Relationships at work or at home are hard, but no one is trying to kill you and no one is asking you to die for a friend. Let the little stuff go. Remember how lucky you are to have your health. If you have ever lost anyone you know how that hurts. The rest of life is a cakewalk. When was the last time you made a big deal of something, that in retrospect wasn’t that important? Did you over react? Think of Lt. Thorton. He was willing to die for his friend and for you. Can you say the same?
