You don't have to have a C1 level to communicate English efficiently. Here 4 simple things you can start doing in your next meeting: 1️⃣ Practice active listening: Reacting fast does NOT make you look smart. Before you reply to a question, breathe in and out and make sure you understand (see the next tips). 2️⃣ Ask clarifying questions: Asking questions like "what do you mean by XYZ?" does NOT make you seem incompetent. A true expert asks first to avoid misunderstandings. 3️⃣ Practice paraphrasing: Repeat in your own words what you understood from your colleague/boss/client. This shows active listening and helps in building rapport. Plus you make sure you understand before you react. 4️⃣ Keep it Short and Simple (KISS): When you share your ideas or thoughts, short and simple sentences work best. The trick is to take a moment before we react and keep checking for understanding. Efficient communication techniques are the second step towards confidence when speaking in English. In today's modern world, success is largely determined by one's ability to communicate effectively, both in personal and professional domains. My most recent language proficiency scores- 85/90 in Listening, 79/90 in Reading, 80/90 in Speaking, and a perfect 90/90 in Writing. With writing being my greatest strength, I really appreciate that I scored my desired score. Here's why communicative skills matter more than ever in today's dynamic workplace: Employers value those who have good communication skills. In any workplace having excellent communication skills is a must. Its a non negotiable. Your technical brilliance is futile if you can't articulate it clearly. "So-so communication is fine," you might argue. But, I disagree. Ineffective communication makes technical strength useless. If I am unable to understand what you say, then the knowledge you have to share is meaningless. Communication is the bedrock of organisations, ensuring seamless collaboration and stellar outcomes. Yet, are we giving communication the attention it deserves? I've seen proficient professionals stumble because of poor communication skills. It's a learned skill often overlooked amid technical polishing. Let's address some common corporate communication barriers: -> Ego & Attitude: Drop the superiority act. Effective communication flourishes on openness, humility and willingness to support your peers. If you talk with pride about your position and the knowledge you own, the conversation isn't going to go as smoothly as it should. ->Distracted Listening: Being a good speaker starts with being an attentive listener. Constant interruption while talking causes disruption in the flow. You wont convey the desired message. And, you won't complete the tasks at hand. ->Language Barrier: This is one of the most common barrier I've seen at the workplace. Schools give a lot of importance to subjects like: Science, Math, Social Studies, etc. Very few highlight the importance of the ENGLISH language. ENGLISH is a language subject which should be learnt, and practiced as a language. The mistake we make is learning it as the rest of the subjects. Learn it only for the marks and leave it. Only years later when we are required to use it for communication at our workplace do we know the importance of it. English is more than a subject; it's a global language crucial for workplace communication. This is my take, and I wont budge. What are the communication barriers you’ve encountered?
