Fire-rated doors are designed and constructed to help contain the spread of fire within a building, compartmentalizing it to protect occupants and property. Here are some benefits of fire-rated doors: 1. **Fire Protection**: The primary benefit of fire-rated doors is their ability to resist the spread of fire and smoke from one area to another within a building. They help in compartmentalizing a fire and providing a safe means of egress for occupants. 2. **Life Safety**: Fire-rated doors play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of building occupants by providing a barrier against the spread of fire and smoke, allowing people more time to evacuate the building in case of a fire. 3. **Property Protection**: Fire-rated doors help in protecting property by containing the fire to a specific area, minimizing the damage caused by the fire and smoke spread. 4. **Building Code Compliance**: Fire-rated doors are often required by building codes and regulations, especially in commercial and public buildings, to ensure the safety of occupants and property. 5. **Insurance Requirements**: Many insurance companies may require the installation of fire-rated doors as a safety measure to reduce the risk of fire-related damage and potential insurance claims. 6. **Increased Safety Measures**: Fire-rated doors are part of a comprehensive fire protection system that includes fire alarms, sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, and other fire safety measures to provide a safe environment for building occupants. 7. **Durability**: Fire-rated doors are constructed with materials that can withstand high temperatures and exposure to fire for a specified period, ensuring their functionality during a fire emergency. 8. **Peace of Mind**: Having fire-rated doors installed in a building can provide peace of mind to occupants, building owners, and property managers, knowing that there are measures in place to help mitigate the impact of a fire. Overall, fire-rated doors are an essential component of fire safety systems in buildings, providing critical protection against the spread of fire and smoke, enhancing life safety, and helping to minimize property damage during a fire emergency.

Megafire Recovery & Resiliency SME ▪️ Founder & CEO After the Fire USA ▪️ Convener: Wildfire Leadership Summit (National) ▪️ Creator & Host: "How to Disaster Podcast" ▪️ Forbes 2022 50 over 50 (Impact) Honoree
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🔥🗣 Innovation matters. In a nation that recently witnessed the spread disinformation for political gain during disasters, the beacon that is Watch Duty sets a standard of care and integrity that should be emulated and embodied across silos and sectors in this work. The key here is a dedication to facts. To safety. To be brave and willing to create. We have to be willing to run towards the Climate-Induced Disasters Innovation space. We have to stop creating plans to flee and start formations to fight for a safer tomorrow for all Americans, irrespective of income, political ideologies, ethnicity, immigration status. It will take all of us with everything we have to mitigate risk, increase resilience, and adopt new ways to navigate. In a world where you can choose to be an Elon or a John Clarke Mills, be a John. Every time. Every day. After the Fire USA
It was an honor to represent Watch Duty and my wildland community at The White House yesterday. We’ve made great strides in the last few years and the feds are starting to notice but we are still living under the constant threat of wildfire in our backyards. In fact, while I was sitting there I couldn’t help but think about the red flag warnings and planned safety power shutoffs that are occurring across my community in Sonoma right now. The howling winds under the cover of darkness reminds every Sonoman of the night of the Tubbs, Kincade, and Walbridge Fires that ripped through our towns. Those nights changed us, they scarred us, but they didn’t break us. Those nights brought together an unlikely group of radio operators and engineers to cope the only way we know how — build and fight. Now when we have those dark and windy nights we only get closer, stronger, and with more unstoppable purpose than the night before. From our homes in the wildlands to the state’s or nation’s capital, we will not stop fighting for our community in the American West

I've been watching the approach and aftermath of Hurricane Helene with a great deal of interest. Some of that stems from my daughter, who is a student in Boone (she's fine and was not there for the worst of the damage), but also because this scenario plays out the same way, time after time. What you are witnessing in the disaster response to Helene is not a failing of state and federal government; rather, you are seeing the LIMIT of state and federal government. A significant gap exists between local and county level disaster response, and state and federal agencies. This gap will likely never be addressed satisfactorily for some structural reasons. A few minutes of thought exercise illustrates why. Mobilizing a National Guard unit takes several days. Determining optimal resource allocation takes several days. Pulling soldiers on active duty off their assignments takes several days. Interagency coordination and gathering of supplies takes several weeks. Meanwhile, the victims languish while local and county resources, often only a few hundred people or less, are overworked and undercoordinated. This hits particularly close to home for me because in 2018, my friend Brian Hilinski and I set out to do something about it, and as a result we launched our startup Harmany, Inc. (now defunct). Our premise was simple: the solution to large scale natural disasters does not lie with large-scale agencies, but rather with grass-roots local intervention in the moment at the point of need by those willing to give what they have. We built out a mobile app designed to match people who needed a place to stay during an evacuation with those who had an extra bed to offer. We designed an evacuation tracker for local agencies to use to determine who stayed behind, who left, and who was possibly missing. We created private networks for organizations such as businesses and religious organizations to connect members across their networks with one another at a moment's notice when disaster struck. Then, we started pitching it. It was a wild ride: TV appearances, pitch competitions, corporate and investor meetings. NPR selected our app as one of 17 "must haves" during an emergency. Fox News called us. The Washington Post wrote us up. We were featured speakers for two years at the National Tropical Weather Conference in South Padre Island, TX. We damn near made it onto Shark Tank - I attached our audition video if you're interested, and five years later I still find it very compelling. In the end, though, despite all the interest, all the meetings with local, state, and federal agencies, all the conversations with businesses and religious organizations, we couldn't find the funding to make it go. Which is too bad, because as you are seeing right now, the biggest organizations are limited by their bigness, while the smallest groups are the best-equipped to do something tangible in the moment. https://lnkd.in/eCt5PzZ9
