✨ Unlock Opportunities, Empower Tomorrow ✨ Our 2023 Access Social Mobility Survey revealed a concerning trend: 51% of respondents feel that inequality has worsened in Singapore over the last decade. This underscores the complex and multifaceted nature of social mobility in our country, and highlights the disadvantages faced by underprivileged families who, in particular, lack access to essential resources. At Access, our commitment has always been to support disadvantaged communities and bridge opportunity gaps to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to rise above their circumstances. Our focus for the coming years will thus be to run more student programmes to nurture confidence and aspirations, partner with more schools to reach a larger cohort of disadvantaged youth, and grow our own team to enhance our operational capabilities. However, sustaining our operations requires collective effort. Now as a registered charity, we invite anyone who believes in our cause to join us on this journey and make a contribution. Every amount donated will significantly impact our mission. Further, with the Singapore Tote Board's support, all donations from now until the end of 2024 will be matched under the Enhanced Fundraising Programme (EFP), doubling the impact of every dollar. As we move beyond our fifth anniversary, we hope to continue making a meaningful and lasting impact on our communities and your support is crucial to our mission. "If Asians matched the US in philanthropic spending by donating 2% of their GDP, an estimated US$702 billion could be raised—14 times the total net overseas development aid flowing into Asia and a quarter of the annual financing gap for the Asia-Pacific region to meet the SDGs". But what holds this potential back? Please check out the Doing Good Index 2024 report from the Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society (CAPS).
Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society (CAPS)’ new Doing Good Index report highlights the technology gaps that hamper nonprofits across Asia. While there are no significant shifts in scores for India, I took some encouragement from the high proportion of organisations in the sample who intend to try crowdfunding as part of their resource mobilisation strategies. Countries of greatest concern in the region are Myanmar and Bangladesh. Download the whole report: https://lnkd.in/dKmX3tEa #nonprofits #philanthropy #DoingGood

Passionate Educator, Entrepreneur, Business Catalyst, Father of 4 Beautiful Kids (Husband of 1 Wife 🤣) | Transforming Education with Thought Leadership, Entrepreneurship & Innovation 🌍🚀
"We may be different in many aspects, but the blood that runs through every one of us is red." Janes shared these profound words that had opened the doors for World Vision to initiate their charitable work in Cambodia. This sentiment beautifully resonates the essence of our shared humanity. 🌍✨ Last Friday, I had the privilege of sharing an inspiring lunch with Benjamin Tan (陈敬新), CEO of World Vision International Singapore Branch, and Janes Imanuel Ginting, World Vision’s Cambodia's National Director. Over a decade has passed, and our company has unwittingly been sponsoring children in Cambodia through World Vision's Child Sponsorship Programme. 🤝 Our conversation delved into the powerful convergence of education, technology, and charitable endeavors. Benjamin and Janes, encapsulated in three words - humble, grounded, and compassionate, shared the driving forces behind their commitment to making the world a better place. Their poignant personal stories and experiences in the field affirm that simple acts of kindness can genuinely change lives. 📚💙 As we scrutinize our education system, let's remember the global reality—children in many areas of the world lack basic education privileges. A single English Literacy program can transform the lives of many children by empowering them with a language to connect to the world. 🌟🤝 Grateful to witness the meticulous work of World Vision firsthand! The tenacity of everyone in the organisation to overcome challenges from all fronts, at every stage of a project and initiative, only with a mission of working with the poor and oppressed to promote human transformation. At Advo, we're devoted to making a difference, both locally and globally, one person at a time. Every life is special; every transformation is priceless. Join us in creating profound change. Together, let's empower young minds and cultivate a brighter future! 💪🔗 Act now, every one of us possesses the power to make a positive difference to others. Support a charitable organization such as World Vision Singapore for a good cause, and transform the lives of vulnerable children in fragile communities around the world! #AdvoEducation #ChildSponsorship #EducationForAll #ImpactfulChange #WorldVision #ImpactfulGiving #ChildrenFirst #SharedHumanity #CambodiaCharity

People want to contribute to good causes, but the main question is always: is my money well spend? Transparancy is the key to trusting an NGO, but good administration costs money and time, so big organisations spend a great deal of donations on overhead and advertising, sometimes to 50-80% 😯 when a CEO and staff is hired. My alternative is getting more involved in stead of a (monthly) payment. Getting letters from the child you support or talk to the staff on LinkedIn and hear their struggle to have an income themselfs, apart from their volunteer job for the NGO. I see now tickets for payed schoolcosts and materials for Violeth. I made a transparant overview of the donation options for Destiny Hope Foundation. Using Global Giving can give more impact sometimes, but you have to wait for the matching events, with are announced (first coming is in July). Small amounts by bank cost lots of transferring costs. Starting another (European) parnter NGO could be an option to explore, because it is not always easy to do banktransfers to Tanzania; in that way we could use EU platforms for fundraising or participate in more grants/subsidies and collect and transfer donations cheaper. Helping Friends in Need is easy when you have the funding, and we have local volunteers enough to help Pendaeli to organise everything. If there are more question on this subject, we both are always happy to look into it. 😃 ^PdL

Offshore regulatory, trusts and private wealth lawyer. Private Client Global Elite 2023. WWL Thought Leader.Member of IAETL. Expert in family offices, trusts, succession, private label funds, compliance, governance.
philanthropy. An area of growth in Asia. Is a separate structure needed ?Is there a tax play in which case a domestic structure may suit? Will it be 100% charitable or will a philanthropic trust be better? Will the private enforcement of say a Cayman STAR trust be preferable to enforcement by the government AG or equivalent ? Is an impact investment type fund a better arrangement ? Offshore jurisdictions can help with some of these issues. “In the west, people tend to think of a charity and a funder as separate entities — the former does the work, while the latter provides the money. But, rather than making grants, many Asian philanthropists prefer to run the programmes themselves.” “All of these funders have been used to having full control over their businesses, the way their money is spent, and the results achieved…They want to replicate that in their philanthropy”

The phrase “give back to society/the less fortunate” is a misnomer. It connotes a situation where one gives their time/money to help others. In reality, it’s a 2-way street, & has to be that way for it to be a meaningful situation. When we give back or volunteer, we not only offer our experiences/talent/network/money, we also learn from all these. I’ve been a volunteer for over two decades. My involvement has predominantly been via the Rotary movement, Make-A-Wish & Dementia Singapore. Pre-pandemic, I’ve also found opportunities to organise small projects, be it fund raising or bringing small groups of the elderly to see the Orchard Road Christmas lights or Chinatown during the lunar new year. This year, I’ve learnt that a not for profit organisation cannot rely solely on tried & tested models for raising funds eg charity dinner or fund raising golf games. Dementia Singapore did something different in 2023- organising a successful charity concert (for 7,000 + screaming MLTR fans!) & arranging to begin accepting digital currencies as donations. We cannot afford to stand still - we have to adapt, stay up to date & move with the times. Yes, even for social service organisations. Good festive period ahead!

Community Development Practitioner II Education Project Manager II Literacy Specialist II G20 Young Global Changer II YALI FELLOW II Ghost Writer
"Every 27th of February, the world celebrates the works of NGOs.These groups aren't part of the government but work to help people and improve society" India Today. Today, I want to share a few thoughts on NGOs and I hope it helps. I was glad when I heard some of our very young volunteers say they are inspired by what we do and they would start an NGO when they're older too. l laughed, but could only advise that rather start an NGO, why not work very hard, have a good job or business and choose to keep a part of your income to fund an existing NGO that aligns with whatever change you want to see in the world. You don't have to start an NGO cos it ain't easy to sustain it. Meanwhile, you can volunteer, collaborate or partner with an existing one to still solve the same problem. Why reinvent the wheel? Secondly, to donors and potential donors, there are many ways to still support a cause without necessarily releasing funds to an NGO if you have trust issue (it's understandable). One of such ways is to relate directly with a service provider of your choice, say furniture maker for an NGO that needs furniture, pay them directly and have them supply the furniture to the NGO. You can also visit for a proof or ask for details. Thirdly, ask the beneficiary NGOs what their needs are, rather than assume they'll need books because they work with kids. Just ask. No matter your budget, you can still meet one of their pressing needs with a tailored donation. Lastly, my apologies if this rocks a boat, but I wish I could tell more donors that ethically, donating to NGOs shouldn't be a means for brand visibility, it's like using the disadvantaged to your advantage, it's ethically incorrect. It will blur your sense of impact for humanity. NGOs need support - financial, human and moral. Take a chance on them but do your due diligence and follow-ups when you donate. Happy NGOs Day.
