When communities stand together, we are able to break discriminatory barriers! The Gay Liberation Front (GLF) was a radical movement that emerged in the late 1960s, shortly after the Stonewall Riots, to advocate for the rights and liberation of LGBTQIA+ individuals. The first GLF was established in New York City, with other global hubs following suit in London, Sydney, Toronto, and more. The mission behind GLF was to challenge societal norms and bigotry against LGBTQIA+ people through activism and community organizing. The first Gay Pride march took place on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City. The celebration was and still is a testament to how these groups and movements changed society. Although the original GLF organizations are not active in the same form today, many have evolved into other LGBTQIA+ advocacy groups to maintain the same vision of cultivating a safer and more inclusive world. It is amazing to see how the legacy of GLF has paved the way for younger LGBTQIA+ generations and activists worldwide. Their impact is a crucial reminder of what happens when people stand united against prejudice – we can move mountains. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dE89rUEC

ICYMI: upEND Movement's Reflections on Pride 2024 "As 2024 Pride comes to an end, it is impossible to ignore all of the ways U.S. policy –here and abroad– continues to make the world unsafe for LGBTQ people, especially those who exist along the margins of other oppression. For exactly these reasons, upEND is committed to developing abolitionist solutions and alternatives that create a better, safer world for all." https://lnkd.in/gtfEdTqt

STONEWALL DAY 2024 - The anniversary of the Stonewall Riots is an important day in the story of the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Today is Stonewall Day, marking the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots on June 28, 1969. After a police raid at the Stonewall Inn, a New York gay bar, the LGBTQIA+ community resisted arrest and protested against systemic discrimination. At that time, homosexuality was illegal in the U.S., and businesses could be shut down for having gay employees or patrons. The protests, lasting several days, are seen as a crucial turning point in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights globally. Trans women of color, such as Marsha P. Johnson and 17-year-old Sylvia Rivera, led the riots, playing vital roles as thousands gathered in solidarity, chanting “gay power” and “we shall overcome.” Stonewall’s impact was profound, igniting the modern LGBTQIA+ rights movement and inspiring global advocacy. This is why “Pride is a Protest” is often seen on social media, reminding us that Pride Month began as a fight for civil rights and equality. The anniversary is also time to reflect on the progress that has been made, and to recognize that there is still more work to be done. #stonewallday #stonewallriots #lgbtqrights #prideisaprotest #marshapjohnson #sylviarivera #transrights #gaypower #equalityforall #lgbtqhistory #pridemonth #loveislove #lgbtqcommunity #civilrights #protestforrights #pridemonth

Have you heard about the 'Be Who You Want To Be' initiative yet? Marking a significant step towards creating an LGBTQ+ friendly village within the town centre, it underscores a commitment to fostering an environment where everyone feels empowered to express their true selves without fear of discrimination or prejudice. It aims to build upon the existing concentration of LGBTQ+ friendly establishments within the BID, particularly in areas such as Queen Street, Springfield Road, Dickson Road, and Lord Street. Rather than confining individuals to a specific neighbourhood, its mantra emphasises the freedom for everyone to embrace their authentic selves. Since the initiative was first unveiled last August, there has been positive changes in attitudes towards LGBTQ+ individuals. However, there is still work to be done, which is why we are pleased to see the collaboration between the business community, council, arts groups, and other stakeholders in supporting this big step for Blackpool. With approximately 15 LGBTQ+ bars and numerous LGBTQ+ friendly guesthouses in Blackpool, we are committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all residents and visitors. https://lnkd.in/eHYSMDMY #Blackpool #BlackpoolBID #WeAreBlackpoolBID #BlackpoolImprovementDistrict #BlackpoolBusiness
The launch of the LGBTQ+ village will create a safe haven where everyone Can Be Who They Want To Be

It’s Pride Month!🏳️🌈 We just wanted to take a moment to look back on the bravery that led to the month-long celebration that we know today. 💪 It’s no secret that the LGBTQ+ community has been discriminated against for generations. People have always pushed back against this prejudice, but for the sake of time we’re going to fast forward through the history books to Manhattan in 1969. 🏙️ At this time, there weren’t a lot of bars for the LGBTQ+ community and those that did exist were often raided by police. It was during one such raid, at the Stonewall Inn, that things changed. Instead of just submitting to arrest 🚓🔒and allowing the police to beat them, people began to fight back. After word got out about the Stonewall Inn incident, people began to take to the streets in protest. 🪧✊ One year after the Stonewall riots, people chose to march from the Stonewall Inn to Central Park, thus creating the first ever pride march. 🌈 Now, Pride month is celebrated around the 🌏. There is still discrimination in all parts of the world, so there will always be work to do to help this community and all marginalized communities feel at home in their skin. We hope this June, you’re able to show PRIDE in the unique and amazing person that you are, while giving others the space to show their beautiful colors. Why, because it’s all about people and showing those around you the compassion you want to be shown. Whether it’s in sales or everyday life, a little respect and love can take you so far. ❤️💛💙 For more information on the history of Pride Month, check out this amazing article from Reader’s Digest: https://lnkd.in/e4KpnbnN #SalesUpRising #PrideMonth #salescoach #salescoaching #businessgrowth #businessmentor #businessgoals #businesscoaching #businessstrategist

Why do we need a whole month for Pride? last year my Pride flag was ripped from our upstairs window. It was late at night, we were getting ready for bed and we heard a loud bang. I thought someone was breaking in and it took a moment to realise what had happened. Just a scrap was left behind. The window was damaged. In order to even reach the flag whoever did it would have had to climb up the wall or take a running leap for it. It took effort. It was pointed. A neighbour found the rest of the flag dumped down the road. So they didn't grab it for themselves. They just didn't want it there. It left us shook for weeks, worrying about our safety and the security of the house, but determined not to let it stop us showing solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. The amazing Amanda S. and Dean Bland, co-chairs of the LGBTQ+ employee resource group at my then-employer were absolutely amazing and sent us words of encouragement and a new flag when I shared what had happened. The groups support meant the world. I'll admit, I'm nervous about putting up a flag again this year. I've had a little one inside the window but didn't feel comfortable leaving the bigger one up all year after that. But I will put it out again. And I'll try and keep it there this time. So this is why we need a whole month for Pride. This is why we need safe spaces at work. This is why we need to be vocal about LGBTQ+ rights. Because though it might not seem like much to you, this act impacted me and my wife for a whole year. Because LGBTQ+ folk still face discrimination and hardship. Because transfolk are under attack by the very people supposed to protect them. Because young people die too often, either at the hands of violence, systemic failure or hopelessness. Pride is a protest. Protest isn't meant to be comfortable. If Pride makes you uncomfortable, consider why.
