Over time, I slowly realized how lucky I was to be rejected by my first potential law firm. At a time when they should have been on their best behavior, they demonstrated a lack of integrity, empathy and communication skills – not to mention a fear of conflict. Every intern asked how to start my career in law: My advise to them, first of all they should assess their capabilities. Secondly, what they are expecting from the profession. Thirdly, at every three years wef completion of LLB, reconsidered their line of action whether to start independent practise or remain with seniors or join legal firm or govnt job or panel advocate or join private sector. #career#law#advocate#judge#prosecutor#counsel#LLB.

IT'S OK TO ASK FOR HELP! My first year out of law school, I was working as a staff attorney for a labor union local, handling adverse personnel actions and discrimination cases. My manager showed little interest in training me. Then, she went on maternity leave and never came back. I soon found myself as the sole in-house attorney for a 7,000 member union. And I started to panic. The first thing I did was to reach out to the state bar and enroll in their counseling program. Most attorneys were there for mental health and substance abuse issues. However, I knew that if I did not find a sounding board apart from the workplace, I was not going to be able to manage the situation. Next, I connected with an attorney in private practice who could assist me with the basic blocking and tackling of administrative law. she was a criminal defense lawyer and also a friend of the union's lobbyist. She patiently answered my questions and I tried not to ask the same one twice. These two steps ensured that I had the support I needed to handle the immediate needs of our members. Over time, we brought on a paralegal and a law student intern to assist me. when it was time for me to move on from this first job, I had a hand in selecting my successor and training him. My clients, the ALJ's I practiced before, and even opposing counsel came to appreciate my dedication. Before I left, I created a handbook to help our members understand their rights and responsibilities in the workplace. The bottom line is that people are more than happy to help you early in your career, all you need is the courage to ask. #mentoring

THIS POST IS FOR ANYONE WHO FEELS STUCK… Don’t be afraid to strike out and try something new. The decisions you make today will not always make sense to others. Heck, your decisions may not even make sense to you when you initially make them. Trust me when I tell you all will become clear when you reflect back tomorrow. I have done so many different things in my career and I have no regrets. 📌I went to college to be a teacher. 📌After college, I joined the Army and became a legal specialist. 📌I left the Army and became a paralegal for a law firm. 📌I worked as a paralegal at a law firm while studying to be a lawyer at night. 📌After I became a lawyer, I transitioned from being a paralegal to being an associate lawyer. 📌After several years, I left the law firm for a series of jobs in the public sector specializing in education law. 📌I have now served as a General Counsel for a public and private University. At one of those institutions, I even served as the Acting Director for Veterans and Military Student Affairs. Each experience has prepared me for the job I have today. Don’t be in such a hurry to write your final chapter. You have a long road ahead of you. It will be what it is meant to be when it is meant to be.
