⚡ Energized and inspired after an incredible time at GoWest - Nordic Venture Capital Forum in Gothenburg! Over the past few days, we've enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and forging exciting new connections. We thank all our guests and partners who joined us for the afterwork co-hosted with Connect Sverige Region Väst, GU Ventures, and SEB. In a panel discussion, our colleague Maria shared valuable insights exploring diverse routes for startups to raise capital. The feedback we received on the panellists’ advice was truly rewarding! Venture Breakfast by Mesh Community was a highlight, bringing together a dynamic mix of VCs and startups under one roof to kick off GoWest. Co-hosted with us, Industrifonden, Alliance VC, Antler, Schibsted Ventures, Dreamcraft Ventures, and NordicNinja VC, it was an invaluable opportunity for investors and founders to exchange insights. Karl-Christian Agerup's journey as a founder, investor, and executive added an extra layer of inspiration. Our Managing Partner, Evelina Anttila, took the stage for an "epic moderation" (not our words!) of the panel "End Game: Exit Strategies." In a dialogue with Anders Hallin and Terese Ahrens, alongside Carl Svantesson, they went deep into the crucial role of proactive exit planning and strategies. This topic is significant for us as a VC with a shorter holding period. “Sheffield is fast becoming the best place in Europe for startups” serial tech entrepreneur Stan Boland tells 32 founders at The Bessemer Society dinner in Neepsend, Sheffield. What a brilliant evening. Stan’s story was terrifying and inspiring in equal measure. Being caught in the tsunami of the 2008 global financial crash on the cusp of a deal was the terrifying bit. Inspiring was the relentless refusal to quit, to lose ground or accept defeat. Alongside this was the need for big ambitions and spending quality time in America, whose energy, entrepreneurialism and experience are unparalleled on the planet. Stan told the other 32 founders at the dinner of his move to Acorn Computers in 1997 which was ultimately spun-out as Element 14 ( Silicon in the Periodic Table) and acquired by Broadcom three years later for $640 million. In 2002 he co-founded Icera, acquired by NVIDIA nine years later for $367 million. Dr Tony Raven, creator of Cambridge Innovation Capital, which now has over $1Bn of assets under its management, gently reminded us that the the truly big tech players in the world were not the products of incubators, accelerators, combinators, but of visionary individuals; entrepreneurs who saw markets where none yet existed. Under Tony’s leadership Cambridge spinouts increased 250%, seed investment by by 750% and consultancy by 90% leading to four unicorns. Like Stan — who said the quality of start ups in the room outmatched those in Leeds and Manchester - Tony also felt there was something special happening in Sheffield. Without doubt there was a real energy in the room last night and an appetite to harness that energy and be ambitious. Folks like the irrepressible Tim Craggs, Thomas Bloomfield and Thomas Milton and the brilliant Benjamin White. Thanks to The Bessemer Society founder Alex Stewart, David Richards MBE, Stan Boland and Tony Raven for lighting their way.
