It took me two decades to realize: 😭 What we tout as busy work culture is not a badge of honor, but really a diagnosable toxic workplace condition debilitating our physical and mental health and promoting busy-ness over effectiveness. Busy-ness is not business. Business is achieving outcomes by collaborating with a well-balanced team of designers, learners, producers, and experts that are accountable for the results. 😬 Micromanagment is not a form of management. People aren't managed. Tasks are managed. Projects are managed. People collaborating on said tasks and projects may need strategic guidance and paths back from being too "into the weeds", paths down from too much "blueskying", and paths forward from paralyzing "risk analysis". A really well-intentioned leader redirects the team onto these paths, sometimes has to carve new paths and always looks back and celebrates the paths that were well-made. People collaborating isn't one person justifying what everyone else is doing. I started my new position at the beginning of Q3. My primary focus during this time was to familiarize myself with the expectations of my role. Q3 was a period of transition for me. I was gaining a better understanding of my team's strengths and identifying areas where we could improve. I made sure to create an open and honest dialogue with my team members, listening to their concerns and ideas for the future. This allowed me to gain insight into how I could best support them and help them grow in their roles. As Q4 approached, I knew we were entering a critical period for our company. We had high expectations and goals to achieve, and there was little room for error. I focused on ensuring that my team was prepared for the challenges ahead. I made sure that everyone was working towards the same goals and that we were all on the same page regarding our objectives. One of the most significant improvements I made was enhancing the work environment for my staff. I implemented various initiatives such as team-building activities, flexible work hours, and open communication channels. These changes not only boosted morale but also led to an 80% improvement in the overall quality of the work environment. Another key area of focus for me was the onboarding process for new employees. I recognized that our previous system was not effective, and I set out to create a new, comprehensive onboarding program. This included creating a structured plan for new hires, providing them with the necessary resources and support, and ensuring that they felt welcome and valued from the very beginning. As a result of this new onboarding process, our retention rate improved significantly, with a 90% reduction in employee turnover during the season. Throughout Q4, our team consistently performed at the highest level, achieving the best ratings in our company’s history. This was a testament to the hard work and dedication of my team, as well as the support and guidance I provided. As a result, our management team received a significant payoff for our success, further reinforcing the importance of our achievements. In addition to our professional success, I was also able to contribute to the company’s philanthropic initiatives. I made sure to allocate time and resources to support our charitable efforts, further demonstrating our commitment to giving back to the community. I ended Q4 on a high note. I feel healthy, both physically and mentally, and I am proud of the achievements we have made as a team. Knowing that our hard work and dedication have paid off, and I am excited to see what the future holds for me and my team. I am grateful for the opportunity that was given to me, and I am determined to continue making a positive impact in my role.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 - 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗢𝗻𝗲 Now don't got into an orbital spin, I won't be posting about this every day! Just thought I'd write a series of my journey in a new role, first day, first week, second week, and then monthly. My thinking is to cover the first year, but hey ho, this could change! So how did day one go? As with starting any new job, I went through a range of emotions as the start date got closer and 'new-job eve' was no different! "What have I done", "Is this the right role for me", "I'm an imposter", "What if they don't 'like' me", "What if I don't fit in", etc., etc.!?!? However, I need not have worried! Such an awesome first day on-boarding and it was lovely to be able to share this experience with some other 'newbies' at the same time and an added bonus was that it was F2F! ✅ I left the first day with laptop that was all set up with access to all that I will and time was taken to make sure I was familiar with the programmes they use and how to access from remote locations. ✅ Staff ID card ready to go, so I can get in and out of the building and accessing all the workspaces I need access to. ✅ Tour of the key areas I will work in (this may take a bit of time to 'embed' in my brain, but how lost can I get!). ✅ Knowing a bit more about the organisation, its strategic direction, and how my role will contribute to this. ✅ Insights were shared around the 'way of working' and the principles and values that drive this. ✅ There was time to get to know each other both professionally and personally. ✅ An informal off-site shared lunch where we could pick up on conversations about what we had learnt about each other, both the 'commanalities and differences'. ✅ There's a plan in place to cover the first two weeks. ✅ Everyone was friendly, helpful, and welcoming. I left feeling very positive, so much so, that I'll be back for 'seconds' tomorrow! What onboarding experiences have you had that were positive or could have been improved? The sun is shining, I'm working in a cafe in the centre of Brighton and feeling on the one side incredibly settled and owning my story and on the other hand full of anxious excitement and nerves. After a year of working on my business I'm at that pivotal point of it getting real. I'm starting to put The Talent Lighthouse and the product The Talent Tribe to the market. I feel more vulnerable now than I have before and also conscious of being very careful to not get too disappointed when sign ups aren't flying in. It occurs to me, that some of these feelings are magnified because after years of having a team and a big organisation to support me, I'm currently going it alone. My email, my whatsapp and phone never used to be silent. My diary was never empty - I barely had time to eat lunch. I felt needed, I felt that my opinions and support were valued. I now have time to think and often now struggle to work out what will be the best use of my time. About a month ago I had a mentoring session and took the advice to cut through the noise. I've been trying to do that daily and to come up with three tasks I want to achieve that day. They can be small things or big things... it doesn't matter but just three things you can tick off and be proud of achieving. I am writing down these things as I close my note book each day. #worksmartideas Working alone, is tough! And today as I walked along by the sea. I am even more conscious of the need to build your support crew and community. I have the benefit of years of experience but what if you are a fresh graduate starting out in the workplace with a limited support network. Especially, hearing so many graduates only required to be in the office 1 day a week. We need to serve them a bit better and help them, I'm fighting hard for this and believe that coaching and facilitating building a community is the right thing. #supportnetwork #ownyourstory #thetalentlighthouse #thetalenttribe #thriveatwork #whereareyouworkingtoday #findyourtalenttribe

Three years ago today I joined the incredible team at Big Leap Digital Marketing Agency (just one week after getting married). Looking back, it's been a journey filled with collaboration, teamwork, algorithm updates, growth, and change. Job creation is one of the central aims of any economic development strategy. Create jobs and pay employees, giving them the means to invest in housing, food, and even a little fun. The employees enjoy an improved quality of life, and the community enjoys added economic activity. This may be an oversimplification, but we all get the idea. Job creation is good. Recently, I was chatting with friends about our ongoing celebration of 20 years of impact with AdventGX and one friend asked how many people Jose Quintana and I have employed over the years. Great question. I turned to our COO Jennifer King for the answer and, honestly, I was surprised. AdventGX is a small business, and during the last twenty years, our projects have included AdventGX consulting engagements as well as community development projects like Grand Stafford Theater, SEAD Gallery, SEAD Academy, the Innovation Underground, and Ice House on Main. We’ve always placed great emphasis on the community-building aspects of our efforts, and I’ve not given much thought to the jobs created in the process. It turns out, we have paid 288 employees over the last 20 years. We’ve also engaged a good number of students as unpaid interns (though many of those converted to paid positions). I have to say, I’m pretty proud of that number but I’m even more proud of our people…which brings me to the real reason for this post. We are about to launch a series of posts shining a spotlight on some of those 288 gems we’ve had the privilege to work with. They’ve been reminding us of some of the crazy things we did…and maybe even letting us in on a few things we never even knew were going on. As it should be. Stay tuned for more, friends. Before closing off for the weekend, I wanted to reflect and share my key findings from my first month at Propel 💭 I can't believe how fast my first month has gone by, but it's very true what they say: time flies when you're having fun! Whether it's wework hosting a tote bag making class or a team social, there have been plenty of bonding moments with the team 🥰 So what are my key takeaways from changing jobs and from the first month in? 1. Changing jobs is a big deal. It's daunting and scary. It's also exciting and thrilling. Change is always tricky to navigate because it's new and you have to adjust and adapt to a whole new commute, environment, way of working. Embrace it! 🤗 2. For onboarding, taking time to know the business and its people goes such a long way! From coffee chats with everyone in the team to really getting behind the business vision, it helps with integration and definitely made me feel better settling in. ☕ 3. You can add value from day 1. Maybe controversial, but let me explain. This is something I was really worried about, in recruitment KPIs and stats like billings are so important. I was changing territory and market, I knew I'd need time to get up to speed. But I was kindly told, "your presence alone adds value here, so don't worry about the rest - it will come." 🥹 And my favourite that sums it all up really: 4. People are everything. As long as you're surrounded by a good group of sound humans, anything is possible because together works 💜💚 #jobchange #learn

Not bad, for some immigrants 🙏🏾 I don’t normally speak about what we are building at Butterfly 3ffect. Partly because we are so focused on getting sh*t done, but secondly because I always preferred celebrating year 1 instead of year 0. Leaving Gymshark was probably one of the scariest things I’ve done. Entering the unknown, leaving a team I loved and starting over. But, I’m glad I took on the challenge and and was able to go on this new journey with an incredible bunch. It’s been a challenging yet exciting year. So, here are my 12 learnings from the last 12 months to help you tackle whatever you’re doing with less scars than I did! 1) Surround yourself with a diverse team of individuals who bring different skills to the table. Embrace their unique perspectives for fresh ideas and innovation. 2) Don’t launch a business on your wedding week - Need I say more? 3) Keep an eye on your cash flow—it's crucial. Maintain reserves and tweak strategies like prompt invoicing to keep things running smoothly. 4) Make sure your proposition is crystal clear: explain the benefits plainly, use visuals, and tailor it to your audience's needs. 5) Be easy to work with - but prioritise kidnesss over niceness. Effective communication and building positive relationships with clients and colleagues go a long way. 6) Stay flexible with your business plan. Things change, so be ready to adapt based on feedback and performance. 7) Remote work can be great, but it needs careful management. Keep communication open and trust your team to get the job done. 8) Create a positive work environment where everyone feels valued—even if they decide to move on. 9) Partnerships can be game-changers. Look for opportunities to collaborate and grow together. 10) Keep learning and growing. Stay curious and open to new ideas and experiences. 11) Invest in solid systems and processes—they'll make your life easier. And take your time to find the right people to work with before making any big commitments 12) Just show up - it’s going to difficult, you will doubt yourself, you’ll make stupid decisions that are glaringly obvious to most.
