Did you know that in the Lone Star State, you can land in hot water for referring to yourself as an "accountant" without holding a CPA license? Skilled bookkeepers, have faced the state's legal enforcements simply for branding themselves using the term "accountant". They've had to remove any unlicensed claims to the accountant title, even though their expertise in managing books was not in question. Interestingly, job positions may carry the title, such as "Accounts Receivable Accountant", but professionals should refrain from personal claims to the title in a standalone sense unless CPA-certified. EA's likewise are not able to claim the title of accountant, adding to the public image and branding issues. How does your state compare? Share your insights or experiences regarding professional titles and certification requirements. Comment below and check out the full debate on the Accounting High YouTube Channel! I ended a fight in the late 1990's here in NC when the Board sent me a cease and desist letter for using the word 'accountant' in my yellow page ad. I promptly hired a law firm to produce a white paper on Commercial Free Speech and some other important concepts and suggested that we file suit in Federal District Court. I also changed my corporate name to include the word 'accountant'. Then I looped in Thurman Askew EA and Jan Bray of NAEA and we went to some serious negotiating and stood up the North Carolina Society of Enrolled Agents with the help of Larry Giles EA (past president) and Sherrie King EA (elected President next) and off we went! The cease and desist went by the wayside. Never start a fight with people that are more committed than you are.

yet another reason to hate Texas. Ive said it to average humans for years. CPAs are accountants, but not all accountants are CPAs(est. 1/3 of all folks who go to work as a practicing accountant).
