I always say that the true power and success of our company is in the people who make up Sappi North America, and no one exemplifies this more than Doug Brooks, a Lean Six-Sigma Black Belt, lifelong adventurer, trusted teammate and valuable mentor, who is retiring in October after 32 years at SNA. With more than 45 years of adventures in his personal life and the paper industry, Doug eagerly applies himself to every challenge in everything he does, whether he’s jumping out of a helicopter in the backwoods of Alaska, diving with sharks or leading significant improvement projects at the mills. After taking a job with Sappi South Africa in 1992, he soon became General Manager of the Stanger Mill, where he was involved in several post-apartheid community development projects, led the mill to achieve Sappi’s first ISO9002 accreditation and instituted a Total Quality/Continuous Improvement process. During his time at Stanger, he became a member of Sappi Fine Paper's Board of Directors. A graduate of the University of Maine with a degree in chemical engineering, Doug moved back to Maine in 1996 and became the Business Unit leader for Paper Machine 1 at the Somerset Mill. Later, as Manager of Special Projects, he led productivity and quality initiatives in China, Europe, South Africa, Minnesota, Westbrook and Michigan. In his latest role as a LSS Black Belt at the Somerset Mill, Doug’s work saved the company over $15 million. He trained and mentored numerous Green Belts and contributed to many significant improvements throughout the mill, including projects related to safety, productivity, quality, emissions and cost reduction across all assets. There isn’t a challenge that Doug turned down or a problem he couldn’t fix. His hands-on approach and his belief in going to Gemba—the Japanese term for “actual place,” often used for the shop floor or any place where value-creating work actually occurs—were part of his success. The idea is simple: if you want to improve your business, you need to learn more about your processes, people and customers; you need to go and see for yourself, and that is what Doug did. But it was the relationships he built and the trust he earned with all who had the opportunity to work with him that will be missed the most. He is currently in South Africa, where his career started with Sappi, to help the team there with one last project. Doug will spend his retirement enjoying his family, including his wife Susan, his five children and two grandchildren.

Thr Effect of Rheum ribes Root (Rhubarb) on Menopausal Hot Flashes: A Randomized Double-Blind, Study-Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. Abstract Background and objectives: Hot flashes are one of the most predominant complaints of menopause among women. The main treatment is hormone replacement therapy, which has side effects. Therefore, the use of plants with phytoestrogen has been suggested as an adjunctive treatment. This study aimed to estimate the efficacy of processed rhubarb (Rheum ribes L.) on hot flashes in postmenopausal women. Methods: This double-blind placebo-controlled trial was performed on postmenopausal women who were referred to public health centers at Iran University of Medical Sciences. Ninety postmenopausal women aged over 45 years with menopausal hot flashes were randomly assigned to two groups. The treatment group received 500 mg of encapsulated processed R. ribes twice a day for eight weeks, and the control group received placebo (starch powder) in the same manner. Data were collected using Blatt–Kupperman index at the start of the study, fourth and eighth weeks after the intervention. Descriptive and analytic statistics were used to analyze the data. Results: A total of 74 patients completed the study (39 participants in the intervention group and 35 in the control group). The results showed that R. ribes significantly decreased the mean of flashing in Blatt–Kupperman index four and eight weeks post-intervention (p<0.001). Rheum ribes showed no serious adverse effects. Conclusion: The findings of this study propose that treatment with R. ribes may be considered an adjunctive treatment for hot flashes in postmenopausal women.

Connecting leadership-driven talent and their future employers | Enhancing your Employer Branding | Let's improve your retention by hiring and developing future leaders! 🦅
Thoroughly enjoyed yesterday's CATCH EDIB Network, it's always great to hear and share some ideas with the network members. Key takeaways from yesterday's session, especially from a recruitment perspective: ❓ Website accessibility Ensuring your website is optimised and accessible for everyone is crucial. Is your website user-friendly for all, including those with disabilities? ❓ Inclusivity beyond accessibility Accessibility doesn't always equate to inclusivity. What proactive steps are you taking to make everyone feel included? ❓ Employee consultation Regularly consulting with your employees about improving processes is essential. Do your people feel they belong and are heard in your workplace? ❓ Interview process accessibility Is your interview process genuinely accessible, or do you assume everyone can navigate your preferred method? Flexibility in interview methods is key. ❓ Supportive facilities Offering facilities like a quiet room, prayer room, breastfeeding room etc., can make a significant difference. Are these facilities available in your workplace? or does this sound alien to you? ❓ Building trust and belonging People stay where they feel a sense of trust and belonging. What initiatives are you implementing to reduce attrition and foster a supportive environment? There are industries that are less inclusive and we have a long way to go, but nothing changes if nothing changes! Here at Huxons Recruitment we are dedicated to learning and unlearning, expanding our knowledge and educating our partners, we want to do more than recruiting. We focus on recruiting AND employer branding! 🦅 Thank you for having us once again Paul McCartan 🤝
We held an inspiring network meeting, with 40 people joining us in person and online. Paul McCartan, our new chair (from Yara International) opened the meeting with a recap of the Biz Week EDIB conference and the topics we have covered in previous meetings. Paul welcomed INEOS as our newest charter signatory and additionally, we're excited to see delegates from Stork UK, North East Lincolnshire Council, Huxons Recruitment, British Steel, Future Humber & Apprentice Employment Agency join us for the first time. A special thanks to Jason Buwanabala and Anika (PwC) for their insightful presentation on EDIB data, emphasising the importance of legal and cultural aspects, effective communication, and transparency in building trust. They also provided valuable updates on the Race and Disability Bill. Wayne Pulford (Answer Digital) delivered a thought-provoking presentation on accessibility, highlighting essential tools for self-checking websites and presentations and considering all aspects of communication and in-person adjustments for accessibility. We appreciate everyone who participated in the open discussions and shared their projects and deliverables! We missed Nina Stobart our outgoing chair - we will celebrate with you at our next meeting in September! For further information please contact Lisa Buck CATCH Katie Hedges Katy Sidell
