In every project, there are fun meetings and tough ones, but they all need to be productive. Even the quick or funniest ones should result in something useful. This isn't just because we're all busy, unproductive meetings can kill motivation, squash creativity, and ruin collaboration. Getting a productive meeting isn't just a matter of luck; it needs preparation. And that preparation work isn't just the organizer's job, everyone has to pitch in. You need clear topics and set objectives so everyone knows what's up and what we're trying to achieve. When people are ready, meetings stay on track and actually get things done. But preparing for a meeting doesn't mean we can't be spontaneous. In fact, it's the opposite. Good preparation sets the stage for those spur-of-the-moment ideas and creative bursts. When everyone knows the agenda and goals ahead of time, they can jump in with great contributions and seize those moments of inspiration. So, with the right mix of preparation and spontaneity, meetings can be both productive and lively.

As humans, we're wired to focus on the negative. It's our survival instinct to look for danger, identify flaws, and stick to familiar patterns. While this is useful in project management (!), it can also lead to biases that limit our options and even cause harm. A little trick - when exploring something new or difficult, where there are entrenched opinions, or you notice you are feeling resistance, try replacing a 'BUT' with 'AND'. Either in your own framing of something or as part of a wider conversation. Eg. 'I want our organisation's website to be built sustainably, but it has to be visually engaging 🙄 ' immediately shuts down the possibility that you can have both whereas 'I want our organisation's website to be built sustainably, and it has to be visually engaging' keeps options and dialogue open for achieving both outcomes in a much more collaborative and inclusive way. Sounds simple, but listen... hear how many buts you hear and imagine what a difference a tiny 'and' could make. 🤓 At manifesto, we are mindful of our buts and use many different effective strategies to keep ourselves curious in pursuit of designing the best possible outcome for all.
