The latest research report with Causeway one.network and ADEPT reveals that the busyness of UK roads and general roadworks continue to rise. From 2018 – 2023 alone road and street work in the UK increased by 41.5%. Whether it’s the motoring public, rapid fibre rollout, or local authorities filling potholes, there’s a heightened demand for road space. The good news is that roadworks now take less time to complete compared to 2021. The bad news is that between 2021 and 2022, the length of roadworks in line-miles grew by 35%, indicating a rise in larger, more disruptive projects. This extreme demand impacts the resilience of our road network, leading to increased congestion, delays, and unreliable journey times, which ultimately deteriorates the road user experience. With the Department for Transport predicting road traffic to rise to 54% by 2060, there is a critical need for more investment. An #APTAsustainabilityOPS24 fireside chat featured COMTO National Office CEO April Rai and U.S. Department of Transportation Deputy Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy Ann Shikany, moderated by Leslie Bienenfeld, Chair, APTA Transit Operations Planning and Scheduling Subcommittee; and Manager of Special Operations, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). They discussed a broad set of community goals addressed though public transportation. Transit’s connection to the Three Pillars of Sustainability (Environmental / Social / Economic) were discussed. The conversation highlighted access to opportunity; energy-efficient community design; vibrant, equitable neighborhoods; and universal access, each of which is a core outcome of transit service. Indeed, public transportation is a central strategy for achieving all of the above, and the work of sustainability planners, service planners, and transit schedulers is central to that mission.

Historically, federal transportation funding opportunities have not benefited low-income communities of color and Community Based Organizations (CBOs). This is largely a result of State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) failing to prioritize equity-centered best practices and community engagement in their planning, policies, programs, funding, and decision-making. Tamika L. Butler, Esq. and The Greenlining Institute interviewed and surveyed nearly 50 stakeholders who have knowledge and experience working with State DOTs and compiled a new report, “Beyond Engagement: Equity Principles to Guide State Departments of Transportation and Community Collaboration.” This report is aimed at helping CBOs and State DOTs better understand how to collaborate and engage with each other in order to advance more equitable transportation policies and programs. Putting equity principles into action can help lay the groundwork to ensure that low-income communities of color have access to safe, healthy, and reliable forms of transportation for decades to come.
