Joint Municipal Water & Sewer Commission expanding infrastructure in an area near you.
Happy to see work progressing on our Bluefield Regional Pump Station! This station is vital to providing sewer service to lower Lexington County. In conjunction with this project, we have five other projects being completed simultaneously via separate contracts with three different engineering firms, including one project in partnership with a private developer. All six projects must all be completed prior to the opening of the new South Lake Elementary School in August. Big shout outs to Hazen, AECOM, Civil Engineering of Columbia, GHD, Shady Grove Construction, McMahan Bros Construction, LAD Construction, Wiley Easton Construction, Patrick Chambers and Ben Kelly!

engineering at its finest before all the equipment to use
Bristol's iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge took over 33 years to build and was completed in December 1864. 👏 In 1829, a competition was launched to help design the bridge, and after years of funding issues, engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel landed his first commission to design the Clifton Suspension Bridge at age 24. Funding issues continued, so progress was slow, and unfortunately, Isambard died before the bridge was completed. But in 1860, as a memorial to Brunel, the Institution of Civil Engineers formed a company to complete the bridge, with Sir John Hawkshaw and William Henry Barlow appointed engineers.

Civil engineers touch on everything everybody uses every day. But even then, the profession doesn’t get as much good rep as it should, right? That’s what Michael Bempah P.E. set out to change! 👇 After graduating in Chicago, Illinois, he noticed pretty soon that nobody knew what civil engineers do. Especially members of minority groups, who didn’t even see it as a possible career for them. 😢 As an African-American himself who had a good job at the Illinois Department of Transportation and then even went on to start his own firm, PINPOINT PRECISION ENGINEERING, he knew that going into the field can set you up for a successful life. In this episode, we dive into the lessons from his own journey and book, How to Become a Civil Engineer, on how to spread the word about this notable profession we’re all part of… …and how practicing civil engineers like you can (and should) help! 😉 Check it out! 🎧 👇

In this episode, Dr. Christine Wiittich of UNL's Civil Engineering department joins to talk about why she got into engineering, why she traded preparing buildings for earthquakes in California for working with farmers in Nebraska and Iowa, what was learned about grain bin structures in the 2020 derecho, and why grain bin destruction is more than just a damaged building. https://lnkd.in/gpgBvVNz

Just another reminder of how important the role of design is in roadway safety. Reframing the narrative around fault and the role of transportation engineers and urban planners in mitigating accidents is an uphill battle, but an important one.
“Could my 84-year-old mother navigate this? Could she do this at night? Could she do this in the rain? If the answer is no, I’m not doing a good enough job at making this intersection user-friendly.” — Melany Alliston, PE, Civil Engineering Practice Director at Toole Design In a recent Strong Towns Crash Analysis Studio session, Melany asked these critical questions as part of her analysis of a fatal crash in Huntsville, Alabama. By exploring the conditions that set up the intersection for failure, we can take action to prevent future crashes. Hear more of Melany's analysis in the session recording here: https://lnkd.in/gUXvsHGV Read through the key takeaways at the link below 👇

The recent Saint Academy three-storey building in Apata Jos collapse is a tragic reminder of the consequences of negligence and impunity. As a civil engineering student, I'm disheartened by the disregard for professional advice and standards that led to this tragedy. It's crucial to recognize that an architect is not an engineer, a laborer is not an engineer, and each has their own distinct role. Civil engineers are trained to ensure safety and sustainability in construction. The saying "What a civil engineer can kill in a day is far more than what a doctor can kill in years" highlights the immense responsibility we carry. Let's learn from this tragedy and prioritize safety and excellence in construction practices. We must recognize the critical role of civil engineers and hold ourselves and others accountable for upholding the highest standards.
